Introduction

Good afternoon, everyone! My name is Jorge Sanchez. I was raised in Miami, FL and have been living in Orlando, FL, where I went to the University of Central Florida for what my parents thought was way too long to complete a dual degree program for Public Administration and Nonprofit Management!

That was a few years back, though, and I decided to jump back into school here at Florida State University to practice the arts of librarianship! That’s right, I am a Librarian in training too, yes just like Rachel Weisz, in my second semester of my Masters of Science in Information!  I’m also on a couple of volunteer boards, where I work with museums and marginalized groups to bring about a little culture and belonging into the scene, it’s good fun.

In the meantime, I’m picking up and sharpening skills working at a library in Orlando, with a pretty sweet Makerspace. Typically I’m teaching classes, or doing some 3D modeling, or showing people how to use a laser cutter without setting anything else on fire. Up there is me with one of my creations. Down here is a 3D printable unknown box we found on the internet that we use to stuff some tools into, and that’s just one of the few capabilities of the Makerspace!

I’m looking forward to this class due to its focus on design in digital media. As someone who is constantly working with digitized everything, learning the aspect of production for what I see in my everyday life is an exciting prospect.

“Burn, Burn, Burn”

Jack Kerouac once wrote in his famous generation-defining novel “The only ones for me are the mad ones. The ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time. The ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing but burn burn burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars ..” I post this quote in the hopes of portraying how wildly passionate I am about life, and of the possibilities and hope it offers. I lost three very dear friends in my 20s, and I haven’t stopped ‘living madly’ since.

Hi all, my name is Jackie, and this is my second semester in the MIS program. Funny enough, I was 18 when I was first admitted into FSU, only completing one year and heading back home to Tamarac, Florida. I’m now 35, with a teenager, and finishing up where I first began my forever-student journey. Library and Information Studies are quite new to me, as I have never wavered from my academic passion, that which is history. Although my fervor for the life of academia might bring upon another adventure, who knows. I recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh with my Masters in history, focusing on the dissemination of liberation ideology during the Cold War period specifically. However, about halfway through my journey in Edinburgh, I had an epiphany, which has brought me back to FSU to pursue becoming an academic librarian.

I currently live in Cape Coral, Florida, although after a year in Scotland I have grown quite fond of the doom and gloom type weather. Eventually I plan to head to the Pacific Northwest and then go from there. My hobbies include reading, photography, traveling, and as of late, pursuing things I am no good at in order to practice my patience and dissolve that feeling of inadequacy that accompanies not being perfect at something new the first time I try it. A fun tidbit, this summer I am planning a cross-country road trip with my boyfriend and son to visit a few National Parks and travel Route 66.

Any who, I am super excited to be in this class with all of you! I’m also near inadequate concerning digital media so I look forward to learning more in that aspect. Nice to meet you!

Is this thing on? 

My name is Jonathan Pupo and I live in Miami, Florida. I have a bachelors degree in Criminology and Information Technology where I worked with a handful of programming languages and coursework/projects. I’m currently in my last year of the MSIT program at FSU. At this time, I’m currently working at Tesla in the engineering department. I started back in September but have had an incredible experience and opportunities so far.

My main hobby at the moment is anything that has to with sports. Whether it’s watching or playing sports, I enjoy all types of sports with my favorite being basketball. Also, I’m a huge Miami Heat fan. Besides that, I enjoy playing video games in my free time and spending time with my family and friends.

What I’m most excited about for this course is to learn about digital media and learning the different tools available for editing and digital media creation. With the help of this course, I’m hoping it allows me to find my creative side and apply it to the coursework and projects we’ll be working on throughout the semester.

Hello, my name is Destiny Rogers, and I live in Quincy, FL, which is just about thirty minutes outside of Tallahassee, FL. I work as an Executive Office Manager for the Gwen Andrews Home of Success Agency, which serves and supports individuals with behavioral issues and mental disabilities to help them eventually be rehabilitated back into society. I’m also working full-time towards my Master’s in Information Technology, with the hopes of either working in Cybersecurity or returning to Digital Media Production, where I would prefer to work heavily on various film sets as a Media Technician or in post-production work. I did professional photography for a couple of years, and I also did some videography work on the side. I want to get back into creative media because I really enjoy creative work and I enjoy the hard work that is put into it.

Outside of work and school, I enjoy doing a lot of different things. My main hobby is crocheting, which dives more into the creative side of arts and crafts. I like to make different projects, which can range from simple summer outfits (bikini sets) and small purses to roses and Amigurumi-styled plushies. Crocheting usually takes up most of my time if I am not traveling with friends, line-dancing, playing with my cats, or going to the movies. I have been able to sell a few items, but I realized that I enjoy making them for my own joy over profiting off of what I can make.

What I am interested the most about this class is the opportunity to build on my existing experience with digital media, while deepening my understanding of the concepts behind it. I’m excited to explore how theory and different concepts can connect to the production process and how to be more intentional with my design choices and storytelling. Through this course, I hope to strengthen my technical skills and develop a more thoughtful approach to produce digital media that is engaging and impactful to its intended audience.

From Classroom to Library: My Next Chapter

My name is Jennifer Gayle, and I currently live in Naples, Florida. I work as an elementary school teacher in Collier County Public Schools, where I have taught second through fifth grade, spending most of my career in third grade. Teaching has been a meaningful and rewarding experience, and it has played a major role in shaping my professional goals.

I am in my second semester of Florida State University’s Master of Science in Information program, following the school libraries specialization. While I enjoy classroom teaching, I feel ready to explore new opportunities that allow me to support students and teachers in a broader way. My goal is to transition into a media specialist role, where I can combine my instructional experience with information and media literacy.

Outside of work and school, I stay busy with family life. I am a mom of six and a grandmother of two, and much of our time is spent supporting my youngest daughters in competitive dance. I also enjoy visiting Walt Disney World and taking advantage of the beautiful beaches here in Naples.

One of the things that interests me most about this class is the focus on digital media and design. I enjoy experimenting with digital tools, even when it takes a bit of trial and error.  I am at a fairly basic level. Through this course, I hope to develop a stronger understanding of how to create high-quality, effective digital content that I can use both professionally and personally.

I am looking forward to learning alongside my classmates and expanding my skill set as I continue working toward my future role in school libraries.

Finding the Right Balance Through Education and Music

Hi everyone,

I’m Eddie, and I live in South Florida. I work at the Miami-Dade Public Library System in Miami Springs. Even though I don’t live in Miami Springs, I spend a lot of time there for work. I really enjoy being part of that community because the library is closely connected to the people it serves.

I’m a graduate student at Florida State University School of Information, pursuing a degree in Information Studies. I’m primarily interested in helping with digital literacy and how can libraries better support their communities.

At the Miami Springs Branch Library, I help people with reference questions and their technology needs. I also spend a lot of time working with children, leading storytimes and crafts, as well as basic technology classes that encourage learning and creativity. I try to help everyone who enters the library, and also during outreach as best as I can with all of their questions and basic tasks.

When I’m not working or studying, I enjoy singing. I’m a part-time member of the Master Chorale of South Florida, a 100-plus-member community choir. Singing with the chorale is a hobby that I love, which brings a balance to my academic and professional life when I am able to participate.

I’m hopeful to improve and learn new skills in blogging by practicing hands-on and am glad we are starting very simply and building from there. Also to learn from all of you and from reading your posts.

Hello, everyone! My name is Nyabi ( “Ny” like “Sky”) and I live in Miami, FL. This is my second to last semester in the MSI program; I am also pursuing the School Librarian Leadership certificate! I am really looking forward to this class and am excited to get to know you all! 

The Journey So Far: 

I began working in libraries while studying as an undergraduate student at Hampshire College. For the past 4 years, I have worked at the University of Miami’s Richter Library where I manage the Peer Research Consultant program, and staff our Research Help Desk. In this role, I get the opportunity to manage a wonderful group of student workers and aid the liaison librarians with research consultations, library instruction sessions, along with other fun programs held in our library Learning Commons, such as our upcoming Crafternoon event! hope to continue working with college-level students, potentially as a subject liaison or student success librarian, however I am open to other opportunities in various school settings. 

Hobbies and Special Interests: 

School and work keep me pretty busy, but when I’m not reading, I enjoy hanging out with my family (including my two children cats Eli and Esme), playing Stardew Valley, and working on various (slowly progressing) sewing and crochet projects! I am working towards crocheting my first sweater (although I may settle for a nice vest if I get tired of single crocheting my way through this pattern). I also enjoy musicals (Hadestown is my favorite) and watching reality TV, particularly Survivor and Big Brother! If you are also impatiently waiting for the Survivor: Season 50 premiere, do not hesitate to reach out, aside from romance books, there is nothing I like talking about more!!

Why LIS 5313?  

I already enjoy many aspects of design. At work I have helped with several artistic projects such as creating event posters, designing research guides, and using Adobe Premiere to edit an informational video titled “Using AI for Research.” I hope to learn many more tips to improve my creative instinct, and help me make better design choices. I am particularly excited to learn more about typography. Personally, I can spend hours just selecting fonts, so I am curious to learn more about the theories designers use to help with these choices. 

The Twists and Turns That Led Me Here

Hello everyone! My name is Christina Mumpower and I am currently in my second semester as a Masters in Information student at Florida State University. I received my bachelors in Education Sciences at the University of Florida in May 2025. I was born and raised in California, but after a few moves thanks to my Navy husband, we have settled just south of Jacksonville, Florida. I also have a 17-year-old junior in high school whom I adore.

I currently work at an elementary school in the Clay County School District as a media tech (library assistant). I love my job and have my Media certificate, but school media specialist jobs are becoming harder to find in this district. I obtained my 6-12 English certificate as well and hope to be in a teaching position next school year.

I am an older student, having paused my schooling for various reasons. As I started working in schools, I fell in love with my media tech job and decided that I wanted to be a librarian, whether it be in a high school, college, or a public library. This led me to go back to school so I could reach that goal. Better late than never!

This class piqued my interest as I have started dabbling in media presentations for lessons I create and know that adding visual interest and interactivity to lessons can lead to more engaged students. 

When I am not working or studying, I try to travel as much as possible, attend trivia nights with my friends every week, and go to as many ECHL hockey games as possible (go Icemen!). I also am an avid reader, which probably comes as no surprise. I look forward to learning with you all!

Introduction

Hello all! My name is Melody Murray, and I live in Jacksonville, FL. Jacksonville is where I am from originally, and although I daydream about moving elsewhere, that does not seem likely to happen any time soon! There are some wonderful gems here in Jacksonville, however. Such as the Cummer Art Museum, as well as the MOSH (Museum of Science and History). I also enjoy our proximity to St. Augustine!

Professional Background

I currently work with the Jacksonville Public Library as a “Customer Experience Associate” in the Youth Department at one of the many branches within the system (21 to be exact). This is my last semester in the MSI program at FSU, and I look forward to graduating in May and becoming a Children’s Librarian with JPL.

Course Expectations

I could tell from our first class meeting that I am going to be developing a lot of new skills throughout this course! I have minimal to no experience with digital media production, and I look forward to expanding my skill set.

About Me- Aedan

Hi, my name is Aedan Bennett and I am in my last semester ever at FSU (hopefully). Like probably all of us, I am getting my Masters in Library Sciences, but I hope to get a Masters of Arts instead of Sciences because I actually started as a Literature major, so those courses make my degree an Arts degree. I work part time at TSC (Tallahassee State College) as a Librarian. Here’s our official page:

I spend most of my time there, at school, or at home doing school online, but when I’m not doing any of those things, my biggest hobbies are reading, going to the springs and parks around town, and running TIRA: the Tallahassee Immigrant Rights Alliance. I’m excited mostly for this to be my last semester. I actually failed this class last semester because I read the instructions wrong for the last paper and wrote about a different topic and my teacher completely failed me! So here I am again, but I hope to learn more of the things that slipped through the cracks last semester.
