I took this photo (top photo) of my son a decade ago! He was running in a big field attached to the local playground we used to go to when we were in Maine. We would go after dinner to get as much energy out as we could before bed, because at three, there was a lot of extra energy! He was chasing my cousin and had no time to stop for a picture; which was just fine with me because I love a good candid any day. In the photo I took, he was in full motion and he is almost dead center, and because the sun was setting, there was a pretty good shadow on him. I used the rule of thirds to crop, (bottom photo) keeping in mind that he had to have somewhere to run to, so I put him in the upper left so he remains in motion and we still get the point of view that I really wanted. I also added a retro filter to stylize it, which I think enhances the sunset colors dramatically without looking artificial.
Hi, Danielle! I love this image you chose. The way you cropped and edited this photo really demonstrates your understanding of photographic composition. It’s pretty amazing you captured such a clear photo with your son in full motion! The filter you added really enhances the image; it almost looks like a little rainbow in the clouds behind your son. Great job!
Hi Danielle, this is an awesome photo of your son! The way you cropped it was really great, especially given the elements you wanted to keep from the photo. The sunset, the colors, your son being mid-run, and you leaving space to the right. It all works great. I also love that the clouds are perfectly next to him in the sky, so that when you cropped it, they stayed in the frame. Good job and very cool photo!
Also, “Pasture Bedtime” is an elite title, haha. I had to mention this!
Thank you! I was pretty pleased with myself for this one! Hahahaha
Hi Danielle! I like how you cropped your image because it instantly shifts the meaning of the picture by emphasizing that he is actually moving and looking forward to his next destination. Positioning him on the left side of the rule of thirds, it reinforced the sense of motion and the energy that children have. I couldn’t even tell that he was chasing someone; it appears that you caught the perfect candid photo. I also wanted to mention that the edited image appears brighter and gives off that nostalgic feeling of childhood joy. You did an amazing job!
