Coastal Conditions is a monthly podcast for anyone with an interest in human geography. Every month, I will share the details surrounding a coastal community. The podcast will be informational, but also somewhat anecdotal, as I take my listeners around the world to expose them to the variety of relationships between man and water. This specific episode will be about Nantucket, Ma, a small island 30 miles south of Cape Cod. What makes the island significant is it’s status as a summer colony, rich biodiversity, and unique geomorphological conditions. The marketing media is a photo of the “path” to St. Michael’s Mound, which is off the coast of England. The mound exists in an intertidal zone and the walkway only becomes available at low-tide. Certainly an interesting coastal condition!

The Podcast

The podcast makes use of voice, sound effects, ambient sounds, and music. I wanted to evoke the feeling one has at the very start of a trip. That moment when you are just leaving your origin point to head out to sea. The sea gulls, of course, instantly place you near water and the sounds of the flag unfurling and ocean waves set you on course. As we leave the dock, we can still hear the hustle and bustle of the town in the background. You can even hear the music of small tropical band playing in the distance. My narration hints at some of the places we will visit and that I will be your captain!

On each episode of “Queer Pages,” we will explore a different queer novel, from groundbreaking classics to contemporary gems, uncovering the rich tapestry of queer narratives that have shaped our understanding of identity, love, and resilience. (I wrote this as part of the script, but ran out of time.)

In this podcast introduction, I used music, voice, ambient sounds, and sound effects, in that order. I used music as the podcast theme song, to hook the listener and set the mood. I let the music run through most of this 30 seconds to indicate that this section is the introduction, but I faded out, back in, and out again throughout the recording. I then spoke about the purpose of the podcast, informing listeners on what they are about to hear. I included ambient sounds, which includes a glass clinking, a chair squeaking, and a pencil writing, to give the audience a feel for the environment. Finally, I used two sound effects: setting a book on a table and flipping through pages. These let the audience know that the podcast is about to begin, and that I will start speaking about a particular book. With more time, I would have then introduced the book I would be discussing.

Description

My imaginary podcast is entitled The Lyrical Librarian. This podcast would combine my love of many varied musical genres by comparing the lyrics of two artists that many people would consider to be opposites. For example, in the first episode, I would compare Pearl Jam and Taylor Swift, two very different artists, and attempt to find common themes in their lyrics.

For the audio elements, in addition to my voice, I found some mellow guitar music for the intro. The music fades out as I begin speaking. As I finish my narrative, the sound effect of applause fades in.

Please…. Sit is about having conversations – the difficult ones. My original idea for the image was a hot seat because that’s how we feel when we’re on the receiving end of a hard talk, but I ended up choosing a black/white photo of a single wooden chair because it emphasized the seriousness of these conversations. Wooden chairs are hard, cold and uncomfortable. Again, similar emotions for difficult conversations. For audio, I tried to capture sounds that complimented a person apprehensively entering a room (door shutting) and approaching a chair (heels on floor) before sitting. The vocals/intro is aiming to cut some of the tension and the music aimed to capture a level of a person wrestling with nerves to mirror all the knots in our throats before a hard conversation.

Podcast Description
I’ve recently been introduced to the world of Sarah J. Maas (SJM). I was immediately sucked into the world of A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) with Sarah’s intricate world-building and personable characters. I’ve not even read all of her released titles yet, but for the first time in my life, I have an immediate answer to “Who’s your favorite author?” After having read Throne of Glass, I was astounded to learn that the creation of this world and these characters were written from the imagination of a sixteen-year-old. In my podcast, A Podcast of Maas Destruction, I and other SJM lovers would discuss the titles across all three of the current series, theories, fan fiction, characters, and much more. This podcast would connect like-minded readers and encourage them to expand the depth of these artworks.

Marketing Elements
Each aspect of the marketing medium was selected for a specific purpose. I couldn’t find any images that had any meaning to the story that weren’t also copyrighted against derivatives. So I created an image based on a tattoo I have in honor of the series and my love of reading. Each element is a creative common that allows derivatives. The image created from these single aspects is from the ACOTAR series, from the mountain range, Ramiel, to the three stars shining above the highest mountain peak. The quote added to the marketing media is one of the most popular from the series and goes well with the stars added and included in the background. When choosing the background, I wanted something that had multiple colors and would allow a sense of depth. The circle graphic with the text overlay was placed to portray a moon. A crescent moon would have been more appropriate for SJM’s Cresent City series, but this still went well with the night sky theme and still nods to her creations.

Sound Elements
As with the marketing media elements, each element chosen for the podcast was very intentional. Multiple pieces of music were created for ACOTAR and played in the background of many TikTok videos. This is different from the TikTok music, but I did use that music as inspiration when I went searching. I wanted an ambient song that felt fantastical and cinematic for this ‘romantasy’ series. I chose this piece because of the beautiful music, but I also wanted the music to include an uptick pace to create excitement and adventure. I’ll admit, I did start getting carried away with my sound effects. I knew I wanted a surprise gasp after I said “plot holes,” but I had originally had sounds for “heroic battles” (clashing swords) and “epic loves” (sighing). I made a design choice though and took out those two choices because I couldn’t fit everything I wanted into a 30-second clip, and three sound effects in that amount of time made the audio sound more like satire than I wanted it to.

Reading in the A.M. is a weekly podcast for readers who love to wake up to the smell of a fresh page (though nighttime readers are welcome too, of course!). Running similarly to a book club, a book is picked each month for the community to read and is discussed in a casual conversation (through Q&A on a community forum) on the last Friday of the month. Each Friday before the last is a segment-specific episode, the third Friday of the month relegated to Genre Talk. Genre Talk relates to the primary genre of that month’s chosen book and analyzes characters, setting, archetypes, plot, and other narrative devices. This episode is dedicated to fantasy.

This podcast makes use of voice, sound effects, ambient sound and music. It starts off with a bird chirping (ambient sound) to signal early morning and the sound of pages turning (sound effect) as a signifier of finding the right page before beginning. The turning pages fade soon after my narration starts. Calm, serene music is played throughout the clip to keep the listener relaxed. As the narration pauses near the end, a dragon roar (sound effect) ends the clip to transition the podcast into its full dive into fantasy and its elements.

Living in Trinidad is a podcast about everything T&T, which is short for Trinidad and Tobago. The focus will be based more on the main island of Trinidad but will feature occasional episodes on Trinidad’s sister isle, Tobago. Topics covered include the “goings-on” happening on the island which will vary from entertainment to politics and news.

I decided to open the podcast with steel band music which is iconic to the island and because we are in the Caribbean, I decided to have the crashing waves as an effect behind my voice. I faded the music to transition to my voice and raised the volume of the beach waves behind which did not compete with my voice. I could have improved on the transition time but struggled with Audacity a bit.

“Who Did you Thank Today?” is a weekly podcast series dedicated to promoting mental well- being and mindfulness. A wise FSU professor once asked me this very question, and prompted me to think about how often we do not give thanks to those that deserve it. This podcast is designed to help you realign your thoughts and is best enjoyed at the beginning of the day, as we all live busy lives and it is easy to get caught up in the hectic nature of modern life. Episode 1 of this podcast starts by asking the question “who did you thank today?” You can give thanks to your parents, your mentors, your professors, and your friends. This episode will explore the importance of giving thanks, receiving thanks, and taking a moment out of your day in order to practice gratitude.

This podcast is for people like me who don’t care for people talking. I typically have a hard time getting interested in podcasts because the talking distracts me from my current task. Ambient Sounds will feature a different relaxing soundscape each week. I use the gong to catch the listeners attention and let them know that we are about to begin the episode.

A spinoff of Reading with Dogs, only having dogs in the background, involved with audio, as we rate various books for readers. This podcast would be geared to youth and adults alike. The goal is to use the fun element of dogs in this instance, and align with literacy and have fun searching for new reads, and determining if they are a let down or exciting- and using canines to help!

I thought it would be interesting to document each step I made as I created this podcast to show how complicated it is to create a podcast :

Possible podcast, book to bite book review

Audio recorder of dogs on phone

Download Audacity for Windows

Upload MP4

Convert Mp4 to Wav file using https://cloudconvert.com/mp4-to-wav

Upload and edit so four barks are together

Separate one type of bark from another so whine is separate from quick series of barks

Create a Freesound Account

Search for a type of ambient music to lead into podcast

Search for sound effect of page turning:
