Ripping through Romance, ep. 5: Icebreaker

My hypothetical podcast is a personal book review podcast about romance novels of all types. I am a quick and argumentative romance reader, and my coworkers at the library joke that I should have a podcast about the books I read, so it was easy to land on this idea even though I don’t listen to podcasts. Each episode would be between twenty and thirty-five minutes, and go through my impressions of a romance novel or two.

In this sample, I used my own narration combined with the sound of pages flipping, to introduce the book-based idea of the podcast; a quick burst of metal music, to jokingly emphasize that not all of my romance novel opinions are particularly nice; and the ambient sounds of an ice hockey rink, to play off of the book this podcast episode discusses. Transcript and credits below.

TRANSCRIPT: (pages riffling) Welcome back to Ripping Through Romance, where I lovingly and enthusiastically talk about romance novels. Unfortunately, in the proud tradition of regency romance readers everywhere, I may be kind of a stickler and occasionally even an edgelord. (guitar riff)

This episode, we’ll be thinking about Icebreaker, (background sounds of an ice rink) by R. A. Graziadei, a recent YA or perhaps new adult novel. It’s a rivalry romance between two college freshmen who are both projected to go at the top of the next NHL draft. To my enduring chagrin, I am in fact a hockey fan….

For this imagined podcast it would be a weekly video game update. What news happened this week or what games were featured in stories this week. Featuring new releases or updates from companies. This podcast would be a comedic or light hearted one focusing more on a more personal narrative of what elements stood out for that given week. For the sounds I wanted a quick but fun intro that sort of faded into the voices without being a long drawn out introduction. If it was a real full length podcast it would probably go for about 10ish seconds. “Blippy Trance by Kevin MacLeod was the best match that I was able to find that gave me the right vibe. For the sound effect I wanted something comedic but not too distracting. I think if it was a full length podcast there would be hardly any sound effects if any at all since that can be cheesy and give more shock jock vibes than podcast.

“Just Beet It” is a weekly fantasy baseball podcast that showcases the league members of the “Schrute Fantasy Baseball League”. If you did not know, the “Schrute” name and “Beets” are references to the television show called “The Office” with the quirky character Dwight Schrute as a main character and who is also the owner of a beet farm. Every week a new episode is released featuring league member player profiles, Major League Baseball news, Fantasy Baseball matchup analysis, and a “Hard Talk” segment with one of the league managers. The managers are interviewed and asked about recent team management moves and their thoughts on other league news. Break out your headphones as you journey into mystery and listen to one of the most entertaining fantasy baseball podcasts around.

This podcast makes use of sound effects, voice overs, and music. I used the “Highlight Reel Short” from iMovie as the introduction music as it was fitting for a sports related podcast. We gave our hosts Kevin “The Commish” and “Statman” Grant a round of light applause from our studio audience using “Clapping Crowd Studio 01” from iMovie. After fading the applause, our host Kevin “the Commish” opens with a greeting and introduction for “Statman” Grant as the guys get ready to talk about the upcoming weeks fantasy baseball action.

Human League

“Human League” is a derivative of “I Dreamed About Being a Human Being” by Fran Simo licensed under CC BY-NC-SA-2.0. Originally downloaded 2/5/2023 in Pixlr and edited with Pixlr, Canva and Image Candy.

It is worth mentioning that to capture the idea behind the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, Article 1, it took a long time to just get it exactly right. There were images I took of Model MUN at the American School Foundation in Mexico City, images of barbed wire, and even an image of a young child as a refugee escaping into another border under barbed wire. The difficult issue was trying to find an that captured the MOST of what Article I was about, more than just one person. My only objection would be the use of the word brotherhood, as many of the articles and aspects of the U.N. Declaration were changed to represent all human beings, women and men.

The difficulty I found was trying to involve aspects of Contrast, Alignment, Repetition, and Proximity. Similar to the aspects of a podcast, there are several layers of editing, and this was edit after edit after edit to achieve the effect I wanted. Settling on the fonts of Montserrat Extra Bold for the text inside the textbox, as well as Canvas Sans for the Heading for Article 1 involved sifting through several fonts to achieve the desired impact of being able to see the text, represent an emotion, as well as fall into the Rule of Thirds effectively while performing the previous three actions. Additionally, working against a busy background and worrying about what would attract the viewer’s attention more all came into play. It certainly patience and many edits to perfect the result you want to attain from the public, and is one worthwhile taking your time on when representing a serious topic.
