Maple Street Murder

Maple Street Murder combines my love of mystery, horror, and dramatic true crime media all in one! I knew I wanted to create something spooky for this assignment, so I utilized ChatGPT (for the very first time! In order to save brain space for the meatier aspects of this assignment) to generate a short “Unsolved Murders” reminiscent script, and Maple Street Murder was born. The overall vision for this podcast would be to follow this particular (fictional) case alluded to in the narration.

Since I recruited my boyfriend for the audio narration, both of our names are on the title card with the idea that we would be hosting together. We used my closet as our sound booth to record the audio narration portion. I found the PERFECT “The X-Files” vibe music to accompany the narration (I gasped at how well they went together!) I was also able to find a spooky/ethereal forest ambience audio that complemented the other two audios well. I then added a couple fades, as well as a podcast filter for his voice. I am overall very happy with how this turned out!

Looking for a Shell Station

I had a lot of good options of photos to go with for this post, but something about the turtle’s face in this edit was speaking to me. In the original photo the turtle itself is very zoomed out, and the turtle seeming out of place on a random driveway is the point of focus. But in the cropped and edited version, the turtle seems to have more purpose. Life is a highway, and this turtle is going to noisily drag itself along the pavement all night long! (The turtle appeared behind me on a walk coming at a rapidly zooming pace, and the rear end of it shell loudly dragged on the concrete, which was what alerted me to its presence. It was rather alarming, actually.) I intentionally left a lot of space ahead of the turtle to convey the turtle’s forward movement. This turtle had places to go and things to see, and I believe my edit highlights that.

While browsing through photos taken by the Chandra x-observatory telescope for Nasa, the group of stars shining so brightly together in this image stuck out to me instantly. It almost seemed as though they were a group, a unit of some sort, that was chatting with one another. I wanted the music accompanying the image to convey a sense of playful banter between companions. Together, I think this image and sound can be seen as a group of stars in joyful communion with one another. Whether they are friends, neighbors, family members, or a group with a common interest meeting for the first time. Or maybe they’re a band! What may be taking place amongst this cluster of stars is open for interpretation, but it is safe to say they’re having a stellar time with one another.

Introduction

Hello all! My name is Melody Murray, and I live in Jacksonville, FL. Jacksonville is where I am from originally, and although I daydream about moving elsewhere, that does not seem likely to happen any time soon! There are some wonderful gems here in Jacksonville, however. Such as the Cummer Art Museum, as well as the MOSH (Museum of Science and History). I also enjoy our proximity to St. Augustine!

List of some of my special interests:

  • My cats (Steve, Cookie, and Mia)
  • “The X-Files”
  • Reading (naturally)
  • Exploring/Dilly Dallying
  • Learning French (as you can see by my title!)

Professional Background

I currently work with the Jacksonville Public Library as a “Customer Experience Associate” in the Youth Department at one of the many branches within the system (21 to be exact). This is my last semester in the MSI program at FSU, and I look forward to graduating in May and becoming a Children’s Librarian with JPL.

Course Expectations

I could tell from our first class meeting that I am going to be developing a lot of new skills throughout this course! I have minimal to no experience with digital media production, and I look forward to expanding my skill set.
