Love On the Road

Synopsis: This video details the story of how my parents met, fell in love, and had me. It is told through old family photos, and set to a backdrop of the Renaissance Fair.

I used family photos, some of them edited by me, and created the ending credits in Canva. I used my iPhone to record the voice-over audio, and iMovie to stitch the video together.

Assets

Vintage Minneapolis Minnesota Postcard – The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, Joe Haupt CC BY-SA 2.0

“The Maiden Lane” copyright Gypsy Guerrilla Band 2009, used with permission.

Rescue on the Rocks

Synopsis: During rock climbing, a young girl flipped upside down on the rope and was helplessly stuck. As a mountain guide in Colorado, I had to repel down and rescue the stuck customer.

Content and Creation: All images besides the last four photos are from Flickr with various Creative Commons licenses. The others are from my personal photo library copyrighted to me. The narration is self-recorded and all other audio elements are Creative Commons assets found from Freesound. All visual and audio content was created or edited using iMovie.

A Healthy Restart

Synopsis: As a veteran and sailor, I have had adventures for many lifetimes. Those came with downsides also, and years of life at sea take their toll on your mental health. Many years went by before I got help, but I am on the road to working on myself. I don’t say recovery because you can never go back to where I came from, you can only work forward.

Background: I spent many years living and sailing the world’s oceans. I have suffered mental health decline and struggled hard to get through where I am today. I’m sharing this today because I don’t want it to be a stigma and I want people to see that I am not some stereotype of a character of a symptom. It has taken years of experimenting with medication to get to the point where I can be almost done with my Master’s degree, even though I want to give up almost every day. Not from it being too hard, but lack of motivation to do anything. Most days I want to just sleep on the couch, which I have read affects your mental health also. As tired and worn out as I am, I get up, most days and go to work and come home and do my homework. There are a lot of downtimes though, as I don’t have much time for hobbies, a lot of it is sitting in silence, listening to another one of my disabilities, tinnitus, ring in my ear. Sometimes though, I remember to put on the record player and get lost in the music for a couple of records and do nothing but let my mind go blank. It’s a reprieve from the everyday. I guess some folks will use meditation, I use this the same way.

You’re a Dead Duck

Synopsis:

This is a public domain story about a boy who accidentally kills his grandmother’s pet duck and hides it. He did not know that his sister saw him do it until she began using her knowledge to control him. He finally confesses to his grandmother who tells him she already knew, already forgave him and was just waiting for him to get tired of his sister enslaving him.

Background:

The story appealed to me because it illustrates how we allow things to control our decisions and our lives because we think we do not have any other choice, especially when secrets or failures are involved. I would like the story to bring the viewer to a place of awareness, hope and forgiveness.
