Like a Lighthouse I Stand, O’er the Rocks and Sand

This is a hopeful post, I promise, even if it might not seem so at first. Listen to the audio as you read if you feel comfortable. It too is full of hope, even if it might not seem so at first.

Today is a special day for me. Six years ago to the day, I was in the intensive care unit after going into septic shock due to an unknown cause. In the days prior to this, I thought I was foolish for feeling like I was “dying”. I thought I was weak for believing that something wasn’t right in my body. At some point however, I truly believed that I might die.

I have always had a fascination with lighthouses. Someone once told me that they were a symbol of hope for sailors, and that if I was ever in need of a sign of hope, the pillars that brought lost men and women home was a great one to grasp onto. Later in life, I had a conversation in a bar with an older man who told me that he spent most of his life looking for hope and never found it. It was a sad conversation, and I spent most of it listening to stories of his life and how he had struggled. It was then that I decided that there are two perspectives to the lighthouse.

Sometimes we have to look for lighthouses in our time of need and when we are full of despair. Other times, we ourselves need to be a lighthouse for other people and guide them. My closest friends know about my love of lighthouses, and so on this day six years ago as a crash cart sat beside my door, I used my thumb to copy and paste the poem “The Lighthouse” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow on my Facebook page. I didn’t have the strength to say goodbye to anyone, but I figured that if they read that poem that they would know what I meant and would remember me when they think of lighthouses.

Obviously I survived. I am a survivor. After many days, months and years of rehab,I am still standing. Like a lighthouse, weathering storm after storm, still standing strong, I continue to keep going for my family and my self. The image I chose for this blog of the lighthouse is striking. It is strong and purposeful, resilient in its ability to withstand the elements. I am filled with hope, believing that I too can be like a lighthouse. I was drawn to both the audio and the image because they represent how I feel about my experience.

From the Classroom to the Media Center

Hi everyone, my name is Delanie Ornstein, and I’m really excited to be starting my fourth semester in the MSI program at FSU! I’m originally from Ocala, FL (think horse farms, springs, and retirement communities), but I’ve also lived in Saudi Arabia, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Tucson, and now live in Miami with my husband and our two dogs.  As much as I loved living in Tucson, I’m so happy to be back near the water, so a lot of my free time is spent kayaking or at the beach. Otherwise, I’m probably reading!

My background is in education – after graduating, I became a first grade teacher and am currently teaching preschool since moving to Miami and starting this degree. I’m really passionate about teaching and education, but I also felt that I needed to make a change and school librarianship is a better long term fit for me. Using digital media in lessons is a great way to engage students in their learning, so I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can about creating digital media that I can use in library lessons!

Small Town Girl That Loves The City

Hello, everyone! I’m Tashi Brown, and I currently reside in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. I live in a small town so I travel OFTEN. I’m studying Information Technology and work as a Software Analyst for the Department of Defense. I’m passionate about digital design and serving my community in my free time. I am a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. I create all the flyers and social media posts for my sorority.

I find this class intriguing, especially in relation to digital creations. I recently turned my hobby into a small business so I’m eager to delve into media concepts and production.

Lauren the Law Librarian

Greetings everyone! My name is Lauren Diaz and I grew up in Windermere, FL. I attended Florida State University for my undergraduate studies where I pursued a B.S. in Psychology with a minor in Law Enforcement Intelligence. Although I began my studies with hopes to one day become a Forensic Psychologist, my Forensic Psychology professor at Florida State University, who also had a J.D., inspired me to first pursue law school. During the peak of the pandemic, I began my law school journey on Zoom. At the beginning of my last semester of law school and after 2 1/2 years of studying and preparing to become a criminal defense attorney, I realized I did not want to become an attorney. Although I met many attorneys who had the job I had always dreamed of, none of them had the life I wanted to live. During my final semester of law school, I began scrambling to find a job with a work/life balance. I was enrolled in an Advanced Legal Research Techniques course and realized all of the aspects of law school I enjoyed were truly law librarianship. For example, I was the TA for Legal Research and Writing and was heavily involved in law review. This link will take you to the Nova Law Review’s website where you can explore the organization: https://thenovalawreview.org/new-page

Ultimately, I found refuge in the law library and made contact with the Dean of the Law Library. The Dean of the Law Library created a law librarianship program for me to complete and upon graduating I was offered a position as a Research and Reference Librarian at the Panza Maurer Law Library at Nova Southeastern Shepard Broad College of Law with the condition that I complete an MLIS program or equivalent. The following link will lead you to the website of the law library: https://www.law.nova.edu/library/staff.html

Apart from working as a law librarian, I am also an adjunct professor for the same Advanced Legal Research Techniques course I previously took. Everything has truly come full circle. When I am not working or in school, I love to read, write academic articles, and collect Pokemon cards. One area of scholarship that I consistently write about is intellectual property and I am hoping this course can enhance my knowledge on copyright. Additionally, my family has a Pokemon-collecting business and one of the reasons I am taking this course is to learn more about digital media in terms of marketing. Another reason I am taking this course is to better improve the promotional and informational material sent out by the library and how to improve my presence on Canvas and other platforms for my students.

A Bit About Brad

Greetings Fellow Classmates,

My name is Brad, and I’m excited to learn more about digital media this semester through the coursework and from your unique perspectives on the subject. The media/advertising world is not unfamiliar to me, as I currently work as a media strategist for a large global firm known as Havas. I work out of the Havas Miami office.

Miami – where I live and work

I look forward to kicking off my second to last semester as an MSIT student at FSU. As I wrap up the regular season that is my academic career, I hope the playoffs (aka the real world) will accept me as a more competent, technically proficient professional—sorry, Noles. Once I’ve completed my degree, I hope to transition into an ad tech role.

Doak Campbell Stadium – where FSU football players live and work

And when I’m not making horrible jokes at the expense of the FSU football team, I enjoy traveling, whitewater kayaking, fishing, and spending time with friends and family. I also used to play water polo during my time as an undergraduate student at the University of Tennessee. Anyway, here’s to a great semester! 🍻

Cheers,
Brad

Happy New Year!

My name is Georgios Argyratos, I currently work in Broward County Libraries as a Circulation Supervisor and as I execute daily many of the librarian duties, this class comes exactly at the right time!

Living in beautiful Fort Lauderdale after 12 in NY (and originally from Athens Greece), my first degree in Opera Performance supported my musical career as a performer and a school teacher, and my love for books and libraries brought me to FSU so to expand-enrich my awareness-knowledge for Information in library science and beyond.

Performing at a gala in Italy.

As my second degree- diploma comes from the Kinesiology method Alexander Technique, which helped me improve my performance skills and my awareness on and off stage, I created with my partner a Holistic Awareness Center and my ultimate goal after I finish this school is to transform it to “A Soul’s Retreat”, a unique library- center, dedicated to spiritual growth, nestled in a peaceful setting. It will house a rich collection of spiritual texts and serve as a serene space for meditation, somatic practice, workshops and performances. This sanctuary aims to be a community hub for learning, introspection, and the sharing of diverse spiritual practices, fostering an environment where every visitor can embark on a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment.

I am excited to embark on this digital media journey with all of you. Let’s collaborate, learn, and explore the dynamic world of digital media together. Here’s to a semester of creativity, discovery, and shared growth.

My very best

Georgios

“It’s a dry heat!”

Hello from Tucson, AZ, where we love to tell you that despite the 120-degree temperatures, the heat here is a “dry heat,” which supposedly makes it bearable – as if a dry heat isn’t exactly what an oven is. I moved to Tucson from Tallahassee two summers ago and I must say, despite the sweltering weather here, I do not miss the Florida humidity one bit! I love being surrounded by the mountains and the desert scenery. It’s a stark change from what I experienced growing up in the flat plains of the Midwest, and a welcome one. Desert living is pretty much as you’d expect, though – I once had both a tumbleweed and a roadrunner cross the street in front of me within less than 30 seconds of each other.

I work for the University of Arizona Libraries in the Access and Information Services department, supporting our reference services team and helping train our library staff and student workers. Academic libraries have been my focus ever since I fell in love with the Bodleian Library at Oxford. I also have a particular interest in the field of digital humanities and in the future I would love to work on projects that intersect academia, digital media, and archival work. After finishing my MSI at FSU, I plan to also complete a certificate in Archival Studies from UArizona.

My interest in taking this class is to bolster my skills in media production. I’ve always loved playing around with programs like Canva and iMovie, but I’ve never taken any formal coursework regarding digital media other than an introductory web design course in undergrad.

This past fall I visited Devil’s Bridge in Sedona, Horseshoe Bend in Page, and also took a trip up to Mount Lemmon, just north of Tucson. (All pictured below.) When I’m not adventuring around my new home state, you can usually find me at home watching Netflix, playing Pokemon and Assassin’s Creed, practicing my French on Duolingo, or curled up with a good book – right now I’m reading Curious Tides by Pascale Lacelle. I also love going to concerts. Next month, my boyfriend and I are going to the Innings Festival here in Arizona to see Greta Van Fleet, Jimmy Eat World, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and I’m so excited!

Here’s to a fun and ecuational semester – I look forward to meeting you all! 🙂

A Little Bit of Everything

Hi Everyone! My name is Marshaye and this is my second semester at Florida State University pursuing the Master of Science degree in Information Technology.

I am originally from Maryland but moved to Central Florida just a little over five years ago to start my career as a Systems Engineer in the Aerospace industry. I currently live in the Orlando area and work as a Systems Analyst with a focus in technology management and product sustainment. Prior to relocating to Florida I studied at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland where I received my Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

In my spare time I love doing a little bit of everything! Some may say I have way too many hobbies and interests but, when you live in a place like Orlando there’s always something new to do or explore. I enjoy trying new restaurants, attending festivals, visiting museums, participating in community outreach, gardening, crafting and reading. I also spend a lot of time at the movies and at Disney World as I currently have a annual pass as well as a Regal Ultimate movie pass.

Out of all my interest and hobbies my favorite thing to do is to travel! I took an interest in traveling post undergrad. Since then I have traveled to 17 different countries and 4 continents. One of my travel goals is to visit all seven continents. While traveling I enjoy learning about different cultures, history and local agriculture.

When traveling, participating in a new activity or trying a new restaurant I often take tons of videos and pictures which has turned into over 20k pictures and videos in my camera roll. Because of this I decided to start turning the media that I was capturing in to TikTok videos. What started as a way to remember these experiences has turned into sharing my travels and experiences with others in hopes of encouraging them to try new things.

From this class I think I am most excited about expanding my knowledge of digital media in general and learning more about web based tools and resources for media production. I hope to be able to use what I learn to improve my media production skills. I am also interested in learning how these skills can be used to enhance my current and future professional roles.

A day in the life of ME!

Perfect Program for the Digitally Divided

My name is Paul Griffith, and I’m a new student in the MSI program here at FSU this semester. I currently live in Pennsylvania, so I’m studying entirely online. I’m also changing careers right now, so I’m dedicating the entirety of my time to this program. When I’m not thinking about what I’d like to do for work next, I mostly do landscaping and play music (keyboards and synthesizers kind of thing!). Just this morning, I had some snow to shovel before I got into my courses, but that’s alright because it woke me up. I think often about how we use both information and technology in the realm of nature and music. Here I am sitting in front of an entire collection of Encyclopedia Britannica, the kind they used to sell door to door in the 90’s! I love collecting books, so I thought I’d get my master’s degree in it.

Before finishing my BA in English and joining Florida State, I served for eight years as a translator in the Air Force. Sometimes the hair shocks people when I say that. I tell them I’m making my money back after having to cut it every two weeks. I’m open minded to the nature of roles I fulfill in the future, but I’m still passionate about the public sector, safety, and security. There are a lot of paths this degree could take us on, and many of them seem appealing. I’m mostly concerned with traditional librarianship, information assurance, and even special libraries, but digital media production is something very lucrative that we could market as a skill while having fun with it. I’m excited I was able to get this course in my first semester, and I’m already looking forward to LIS 5362!

This course is as interesting to me personally as it is professionally. I’ve worked with audacity before while working with music technology, both on my own and in scholastic programs. Every year I sit down with Gimp (because it’s free) and relearn the basics to create a meme. I don’t have much experience with video editing software, but I’m excited to learn a lot and get creative again. Good luck to everyone else here!
