The Ravenclaw Common Room

“Ravenclaw Common Room Podcast Art” by Amal Albaladejo is licensed under Canva’s Pro Content License.

The Ravenclaw Common Room is an imagined, fantastical podcast set within the world of Harry Potter. Broadcast from the Ravenclaw Common Room, as the series name suggests, it’s dedicated to the students of Hogwarts filled with curiosity, intelligence, and the pursuit of knowledge. Each episode explores magical theory, ancient runes, forgotten spells, and the deeper questions behind the wizarding world.

The combined sound elements present a tone of calmness, thoughtfulness, and slight mystery. The episode opens with soft and instrumental fantasy styled music, with an ambient wind effect playing underneath, to set the scene of being in a magical tower high above Hogwarts. The music quietly continues under my spoken narration, recorded by myself. Sound effects include a page turning and a quill writing to create the atmosphere of scholarly investigation. The music subtly swells towards the end of the intro to build excitement towards announcing this week’s topic before officially diving deep into it.

Visit the Parks!

I recently got back my film photos, taken by my boyfriend, so I decided to dig through those for this assignment. We took a camping trip to Cooper’s Rock back in July (a West Virginia state park), and they had a beautiful lookout over the river and mountains. I found this one particular image that I thought could do really well for a state park advertisement. While I still like the wide landscape of the first photo, the second uses composition techniques like the rule of thirds to un-center me, a simplified background, and leaves room for me to look off in the distance. When cropping I was thinking about one of the examples from class where the professor mentioned creating a canvas for text, which is exactly what went through my mind here. In the green space to the left of me, I can easily envision something being said to draw visitors to the park!

The Calm After the Storm

If you haven’t gotten the chance to read my introductory post, its good context to know that I reside in a tiny town in West Virginia. Tonight, around midnight, much of the east coast is expecting the most snow its seen in years, and my tiny town is right in the middle of it all. I took inspiration from my anticipation and thought about those nights where you lay in bed hearing the wind howl, seeing snow flurries rush by your window. Then you wake up, all is still, and as you peek out between your blinds you see that the world outside is covered in a fresh blanket of snow. I wanted to capture this feeling through this project.

Combining Media Production with Libraries: An Introduction to my Final Semester!

As I join our class blog, I would love to introduce myself to you all. My name is Amal Albaladejo, and I am especially excited for this semester because it is my final one! Upon my graduation this spring, I aspire to begin my career in either museum libraries or archives, with a special interest in art and audio/visual. As of now, I currently work and get all my schoolwork done from the front desk at the Bavarian Inn. It’s located in a tiny, hallmark-esk town called Shepherdstown, West Virginia. It’s super cute, and also near enough to D.C. that I get to venture out to the city from time to time and walk amongst some of the greatest museums.

Along with my interest in the audio/visual, I come from an undergrad of Digital Communications & Multimeda Production through Florida International University. I decided to take this class because I believe it greatly complements MIS coursework as these are hard skills we can use in the field, and I would love to improve those production skills at a graduate level. Though I have learned so much through this program thus far, I have missed those creative assignments and am thrilled to have them back for my final assignments ever (that’s crazy to think about).

Ollie camping in Virginia

Outside of work and school, I love to explore and spend time out in nature, whether that be camping, swimming, or taking my dog on a hike (he may look small, but he’s got it!). Often, I will make video diaries of my travels to upload to my just-for-fun YouTube channel, or at least bring along my camera to snap some photos. When home I like to relax by painting, strumming the guitar, or watching films (and logging them on Letterboxd of course).

I can’t wait to get to know all of my peers, and am looking forward to a fun, final semester! 🙂
