(prescript: while i know this is a master’s class, my blogging experience is casual a la my tumblr, and lowercase is just enjoyable. i’m staying in that cant for this post, but if it’s too unprofessional, i’ll step outta it)
hello folks! my name is whalen, and i’m pretty fresh on the block in this master’s degree (just turned 20 years old, gosh). i’m still in tallahassee from my bachelor’s in ict there, and i’m just about to start a job at the community college’s nursing library. i want to be a public librarian when i grow up after i graduate, and especially want to be involved with events, outreach, and yes, media.
in my spare time, i’m largely a game developer, ranging from hours-long adventure video games for sale on steam to piddly little physical games that are mostly toying with mechanics. i’m also the vice president of fsu’s video game development club, devlup @ fsu. i like to explore and play around with how people interact with the world, both in my career and out of it. if anyone else here is also interested in board game design, reach out to me, i want to find my people.
a rapid fire list of other descriptors: artist, tea drinker, cuddler, likes premier league soccer but doesn’t yell at it, enjoys a good crossword, reads sci-fi short stories from the mid-century, mildly disabled (maybe a cyst on my spinal cord?), learned a significant portion of higher-level vocabulary from magic: the gathering, low-brow taste in food, astronomy fan, astrology hater, wears blankets when on the computer like an old lady in her rocking chair.
Hey! I want to lead with how much I love the all lowercase approach. I don’t see it as unprofessional, I see it as a style choice that did exactly what it was intended to do and brought me back to Tumblr. For me this post was a nostalgia trip and I really needed that. I think it is really cool that you are in video game design as that is something that I myself cannot do and find fascinating. I never got coding so I think people who do and can do it well are pretty amazing. Nice to meet you!
Hi Whalen nice to meet you! I cant believe you are a game developer, that is so cool! I have more questions but I guess we wont be in the same group for very long so I’ll refrain haha. I also love crosswords too, me and my roommates do them every day on New York Times. I was also interested by your experience working in the Video Game developer club at FSU, is that connected to the ASLC video game club or is it separate?
Hello Whalen, I really enjoyed reading your blog post about yourself. Choosing to go lowercase for everything shows me you like to be unique and have your work stand out. I can respect that as a fellow artist. It is nice to hear you want to be a public librarian, which I’m currently working as a trainee. I have to tell you that your skills will be very useful when conducting learning programs and helping those patrons in need at the library you’ll no doubt one day be working at. I’m an old-school gamer and find it very cool that you enjoy coding and publishing games. I look forward to seeing what you have created.
