I took the photo “Docked the Port” while traveling, it captures a busy port in Saint Lucia. In the photo you are able to see roofs of some of the locals’ houses, plants, cruise ships, mountains and shipping containers. It’s hard to tell what the main subject(s) of the photo are because of the various details shown. By cropping the photo I am able to create a new composition.

Cropping out the unnecessary details allows for the single cruise ship to be the focal point of the photo. The story of the image is changed, as the ship comes to forefront and is then accompanied by a relaxing background. The photo goes from very busy and chaotic to serene. By off centering the ship it leaves room for movement and it appears almost as if the ship is about to leave the island and head off to sea.
Hi Marshaye, I love the image and I hope one day I will be able to take a cruise. You did a good job cropping the picture. I like that you removed the top of the building and trees, it took away from the beauty of the ship. Also, was that another ship in the picture to the right? I agree the centering made it look like it was headed out to sea and gave a close-up of the ship without the distraction of everything else. Great job on this assignment.
Hey Marshaye! Your blog shows how cropping done in the right way can change the subject in the picture! In the original picture when the first thing I saw was the bigger cruise ship on the right and the loading dock filled with containers. Maybe it was because of the rule of third that my vision went straight to the docks. The second image does bring the cruise ship into the limelight. The rule of third is applied on ship I think the cropping was on point for the blog.
Hello Marshaye! I love your photo. It reminds me of the cruises I have gone on and how much I would love to be on one right now. I agree with you, in the first picture it is hard to find one focal point. The cruise ship is in the distance and is overshadowed by the port and the town nearby. With your cropped photo, we can now see the ship as well as the beautiful skyline behind it. One suggestion I can give is to give a link to the creative commons license for your photo. Great job!
