The joys of Daytona Beach
CC- Sharon A. Frazier – 1/27/2024
Over the weekend, I visited Daytona Beach for my birthday.
I walked in the sand along the shore taking photos. The waves were high
so I didn’t venture into the water. I sat in the sand and enjoyed the
the children playing in the water or attempting to swim.
This particular child caught my eye. She appears very far out
and the waves are cloudy in the first photo.

Daytona Beach being enjoyed in its finest
In this second photo, my edits allowed for a better view of the girl, while
sitting near the shore, a more significant focal point while playing.
I also wanted to focus on the details and more clarity of the waves as they
rolled in. I eliminated the concentration of the larger view of the beach
and made the photo display a more concrete focal view.
Hello Sharon!
What a beautiful scene! I almost forgot that it is warm in other parts of the world. To think about swimming in the ocean where I am is chaotic. You would freeze. I am jealous of all the Floridians enjoying the current moderate weather and blue skies.
I appreciated your keen eye when cropping this image closer to the child. I think your crop helps a great deal in helping the audience focus on the target. I noticed you did a great job putting her in the top third of your image. If I were to make a suggestion for a minor edit, I would take her slightly to the right, exposing a bit more of the wave that is moving in and allowing her to be centered in one of the focal points. I think that would allow the eye to move a tad easier through the photo.
Thank you for sharing!
Hi Sharon!
As I am in the 40-degree rainy weather this photo of the beach is making me ready for the summer. When I saw the first photo I was curious to see what you were choosing as your focal point. Your cropping shows something that was not something I even noticed in the first photo. I think it would have been better to focus her in the bottom corner though rather than the right and had more of the building displayed. In the current cropping, it seems a little abrupt of a chop since you can still see a bit of the building.
Hi, Sharon! I love this photo. I’ve only been to Daytona Beach a few times, but I do have to say, it’s one of my favorite beaches to go to. I feel like I’ve stood where you were standing when you took this photo… though definitely NOT in January. Kids, what can you say? They’re resilient.
The composition of your image, with the positioning of the girl in the upper left quadrant, almost lets you see the motion of the ocean. The sea break forms a bit of a line heading up towards her, and the surf in front of her is another small line leading away from her. Of course, we can’t control nature, neither is a perfect line, but it’s still an interesting thing to note. It makes it clear that, as you said, the girl isn’t the only subject: the waves are as well.
Hi Sharon! Nice to meet you. Happy belated birthday! It looks like you picked a day with good weather to enjoy the beach. I didn’t notice the girl in the original image so punching in on her as the focus was a good choice. You locked her in on the rule of thirds line and used the lines of the waves as the weight and mark for the opposite side. I think I would have preferred the building and skies to be more in the frame, but you already mentioned that the girl and waves were your focus. Without the change, we wouldn’t be able to see the girl or the people in the background as well, so I think this is still a greater improvement. Nice work!
