“Battle for the Ball” by Megan Holkup

In the original image, the player in the lower left was the dominant figure that was drawing attention, followed by the others on the right side. After noticing those individuals, the eye could then see the actual dramatic story that was unfolding on the floor. In order to highlight the jump ball that was happening on the floor, I needed to crop out the player on the left. By cropping out most of the portions of the bodies of the players on the right, they are no longer the focus, and instead the eye is drawn to the players on the floor. Additionally, they take up the center third of the image. This image would have been much more dramatic if the players on the right were not in the way, however, I wanted to highlight the fact that you can use cropping to draw focus to figures that might be slightly hidden as well by using cropping. As a bonus editing step I would likely bring up the highlights in the photo so that the white in the player’s jersey on the floor would stand out more. This would draw even more attention to that area.
Hello Megan:
That post made me laugh so hard, it just reminds me of myself when I was young and obsessed with sports. I was a very fast runner which the school made me play in marathon where there was almost 3,000 student and I won the third place. I been always interested in sports, and I took things more seriously that it supposed to. So, seeing your post just remind me with a lot of memories from my childhood.
Wow, a lot is going on here. When it comes to facial expressions, I pick them up quickly. I immediately started from the back left before I worked my way to the girls, battling tooth and nail over the ball. A huge eye-catcher is the green Nikes located at the bottom left of the photo. They stand out with the red Nike symbol. The second photo clears out a huge chunk of the distractions. It looks like a lot to work with. It would be awesome to see a focused shot of the young person with black hair holding on for dear life. I think it would be difficult to get an even closer shot without distorting the shot even more. Good work.
Hi Megan! Great job on catching the facial expression as I would not have been able to myself from looking at it. Being a sports fanatic, although I was never part of an official basketball team, seeing these images reminds me of my younger self when I would play pickup basketball with kids from the neighborhood. Passing the ball, and falling on the court, we all made that same face at some point. I could see the image being cropped and emphasizing the girls sitting on the bench in the back as they also tell a story. Overall great work!
