I started this assignment by searching for photos of flower gardens, as I wanted some beauty to brighten up my day. I love this photo of a flower garden hill as it’s so vibrant and I can practically smell the flowers and the outdoor air. After finding this lovely photo, I thought of creative ways to connect sound to the image. At first, I thought literally of sounds of things found within the photo such as the sound of cars passing by. Then I thought about references I could make, such as including the sound of talking to reference the talking flowers in Alice in Wonderland. Finally, I focused on what the photo made me feel. My strongest feeling was that I wanted to roll down a hill like a carefree child.
While realistically rolling down this hill would be a pretty short journey as I’d immediately crash into the first row of flowers on my way down, I can’t help but imagine what it would feel like to bounce over and on top of the garden I as rolled down the hill. This audio represents my strong urge to feel like a kid, tuck my arms in, and let gravity take over. I felt the texture of the audio matched the curved texture of the landscape. When you roll down a steep hill, it can feel violent. Your bones and teeth rattle around like a wooden ball bouncing on ceramic floors. Eventually, you reach the bottom of the hill, and your bouncing and rolling comes to an end.
Hi Kendal. I love the colors and view of your image; it reminds me of standing or sitting on a balcony during a mid-spring day sipping tea or wine. I enjoy looking at and the smell of certain flowers so I can understand why you picked this image. The sound was different at first, I thought it was clapping or a pinball machine game, which does bring out the kid in me. I am not spontaneous, so rolling down a hill does not sound like fun, and I would hate to destroy the beautiful flowers. All links work and great job on the assignment.
Kendal,
When I think of Alice in Wonderland, my first thought is of gloomy forests with dark green and purple tones (and meetings with mysterious or mad supporting characters clad in purple), but it’s an expansive work which also showcases manic reds, whites, and pinks later in the story. The neatness of these rows remind me of the designs on the borders of playing cards, that neatness and symmetry also showcased in the design of interpretations of Lewis Carroll’s work. That’s a good connection, I’m unabashed about making pop culture references when I see them.
The audio clip reminded me of a spray-paint can at first, and I like how everyone who has commented on the audio clip has heard a different inspiration! That means the audio could probably be repurposed a lot of ways if someone wanted to. While I usually don’t associate spray-painting with fields, I associated it with color palettes like the one we see on the field in the picture. Rolling hills for a rolling wooden ball relate to each other well.
Kendal, this was such a creative use of a sound and shows that you have a creative spirit. Never would I think to compare the sound of a rolling ball to the experience of rolling down a hill and I think that this provides for a very funny image. I think it’s important for us as adults to always think back to our childlike nature, allowing ourselves to shed the mask of rigid adulthood and just be. Letting gravity take over, letting our childlike whimsy take over for once. Being spontaneous and choosing to roll down the hill. Beautiful post. Thank you for sharing.
Kendal, this was amazing. I absolutely love flowers, first and foremost. I was in awe of the picture alone. The beautifully designed colors and types of flowers were breathtaking. It also reminded me of taking a long motorcycle drive down a beautifully accented mountainous area. When you added the sounds, I could see how they would provide a different aspect and view of the simplistic view of the flowers.
Hi Kendal, what a beautiful photo! I agree with everyone that your creativity shines through here. Your pairing of such a scenic, beautiful image with this joyful and comical audio gives me a new perspective, imagining a small ball rolling through the fields of flowers. I think how differently the ball would view this massive landscape from the ground as it rolls through, and suddenly I am a bit envious of it. Great work this week. Thanks for reminding us all to stop and smell the flowers!
