Did anyone else have a difficult time choosing an image for this assignment? I feel like that was the most difficult part! After much deliberation I decided on this photo. In the original the car is so far away it’s easy to overlook. The sky also shows more of a sunset or sunrise, with the blue around the edges implying a shift in time of day. The road is featured prominently in the center of the photo, with the sun off to the right.
In the crop, the car is larger and easier to take note of. The road is in line with the first vertical line of the rule of thirds grid. The sun is now almost centered in the image. All of the blue from the sky has been cropped out so the sky is a full fiery orange and yellow. This makes the image feel much warmer overall.
This derivative uncenters the main focus (the road), and it changes the mood of the photo.

I second your thought on how difficult and time-consuming it was to choose an image for this assignment. I was not convinced or looking for much better images that would tell a story. Your picture and post tied me up as a reader. I almost never noticed the car in the first picture until reading your post. The change of focus has eliminated the dark clouds and made the sun prominent object without any distraction. I liked how you made the yellow traffic lines to align with the rule of thirds grid lines. I enjoyed reading your post and I wish you all the very best to bring out such amazing posts in the rest of the semester.
Hi Annemarie, I really enjoyed this photo and thought that your crop brought more movement overall to the photo than in the original. I think that your choice of moving the yellow lines in the road over to the left to line up with the rule of thirds was a great choice, as it invoked the feeling of motion and showed the car moving towards the sunset. I also agree that having the sun being in the center brought forth a sense of warmth and closure to the photo than in comparison to the original photo, where I felt as though there were competing elements and no single focal point. Overall, I really enjoyed reading your post, I thought that you did a fantastic job!
