I’m a Boston Terrier owner first and foremost. My Boston Terrier’s name is Buster and we work with the Boston Terrier Rescue of Florida.
I came across this photo of a Boston Terrier by Michael Gwyther-Jones and instantly thought this was the facial expression a Boston Terrier would make if they were getting beamed up by an alien ship. I thought pairing the dogs bewildered look with the tractor beam sound by shimsewn would capture the moment perfectly.
Overall, the pairing of the tractor beam sound enhances the slightly confused but curious look on the Boston Terrier’s furry face.
David, I liked your unique pairing with this assignment. Overall, it gave me cartoonish vibes, and I could imagine a similar image or sound being used in an animated movie. Prior to listening to the audio and reading your post, I did assume the sound would be something regarding food or a squeaky toy. I know as soon as a chip bag crumples in our household, this is the look that we get from our dog. That could be an interesting alternative.
Individually, the image is an adorable dog, but it does not make me think of much more than that; the sound reminds me of the movie Signs and gives off an eerie vibe. With your combination choice, the meaning of the image was transformed and allowed me to become entranced with the Boston Terrier’s eyes. The collaboration between the two made me hyper focused on how the dog’s eyes are glazed over, which allowed me to infer that the dog is not only engaged with the sound but some object in front of him. In this trance-like state, it would make perfect sense for a dog to stay put instead of running away. I felt like I was getting beamed up too. Great job!
Hey David, love the Boston Terrier! When I first saw the photo, I not only thought of a cute photo that would be on a monthly calendar full of Boston Terrier’s, but it also gave me cartoonish vibes like Taylor said. I saw it more as a foreground for a meme, with the Boston Terrier saying a slick come back to the mail man, obviously in a Boston accent. When I played the audio by itself, it was ominous and sounded like a drone that you would expect to hear in the next Alien vs. Predator movie. Merging the two together with the large, staring eyes of the Boston Terrier with the drone in the background, it transformed the pairing to where you could sense and feel the dog’s extreme focus, most likely either waiting for a ball to be thrown or a treat to be given. Another audio choice that could be used would be a classical piece of music, since Boston Terriers look like they are little gentlemen. Overall, it made me laugh thinking about how I will be reminded of this sound anytime I give my dogs treats now. Great Job!
Thank you all for the feedback!
