This picture shows that the photographer is driving in the car with the sunset behind them. It tells the audience that they are driving away from the sunset but still found it worthy to take a picture. Taking the picture in the mirror of the car frames the sunset in an interesting way.

I cropped the picture this way because it tells a completely different story than the original. With this crop, the audience doesn’t have any context as to who took the picture, allowing for more interpretation. I also think it puts the focal point more on the actual sunset and less on the mirror of the car while still being able to tell that the photographer is close to the road.
I liked how your version draws the eye to the sunset. The sunset creates an ambiance of peace and beauty. Back at home in Nigeria, the weather is usually warm and I enjoy going for a walk or a drive especially in the evening. This image definitely brings back memories. Great job, Emily!
Emily,
This is a great example of improving on a photo. The original strikes me as someone trying to be “artsy” with their photography. But you show that in the end, the subject of the photo is really the star of the show. I think it reminds us that subject matter is more important than “bells and whistles”. I think it also shows that expertise is important. Anybody can mechanically use an incredibly powerful phone camera or use simple editing tools. Even advanced editing tools like Photoshop can be learned. But an artistic eye is something I think is a talent, not a skill. I commend you on your ability to see how to improve on the original photo.
