The photo I chose to crop is a picture that I took of my cousin Minkah Merritt and my sister Olivia Jones. This photo was taken in January 2019 in Statesboro, GA where I was born.
I decided to pick this photo for our Media Lab 3 composition exercise because it is super special to me. Why you ask is this photo so special to me? First off, I took the photo and second it is special because of the fury four-legged Shih Tzu posing at the bottom of the picture named Nori. My 1st cousin Minkah and my sister are also super special to me but as far as this picture is concerned it is all about Nori.
Before Photo

The original photo has a large red piece of furniture in the frame and the right half of the picture shows way too much of the hallway and open door which is not essential to the picture. The picture does have Nori who posed perfectly on cue with everyone else in the photo.
After Photo

The cropped photo has better composition. The red piece is no longer in the photo and you now have a beautiful photo of Minkah, Oliva and Nori. Also, I used the rule of thirds to center everyone on the left of the frame while cropping out a lot of the hallway and open door that was on the right of the frame. The cropped photo has much better composition and makes for a great family picture!!
Hi Deidra!
First of all, I just want to say that Nori now has a special place in my heart where they will live from now on!
Second, I have to say that you’ve done a fantastic job! This was a good photo choice, with the cropping making the effect of the photo better. The removal of the extraneous furniture and hallway did a lot to remove visual noise and increase focus. It also serves to make the picture cozy and intimate, drawing the figures into a smaller space rather than wedging them together in the corner of a larger area. I especially like how the couple and our photo bombing puppy each occupy their own separate thirds of the image. And with this cropping, it makes it appear more like Nori had just ran up to join the picture, instead of looking like they just been there all along. All in all, I can’t think of anything that would improve this.
Great work!
Good Job Deidra. The initial photo was ok, but the open door in the back took away from the photo as it was kind of a distraction. Your family takes good portraits. In your crop, the removal of the door and red couch makes your photo stand out. Did you think of just doing a close crop of your family? That would make a printable picture with the removal of the doors. But overall good job on the cropping.
