I chose to crop this image as I felt that the original compostion didn’t have a focal point. I tried out a few croppings with the man on the bicycle and the shadow, but felt that with both it was too centered and busy. I chose instead to focus on the shadow of the man on the bicycle as I felt like the texture of the wall and the shadows were the most interesting part. When cropping I took into account the rule of thirds. Unfortunately, to get the image I wanted without any of the physical bicycle it does halt movement in the frame after it was cropped like mentioned in class.

Hi Kayla,
I thought the primary image was already so amazing looking the way it was. Very atheistically pleasing. But it is kind of difficult to see who is the main focus of the image. Is it the person sitting on the stairs or the person on the bike? Since they both are equally too far away and about the same size in this image. There seems to be too much scenery surrounding them, the stairs, the water, and building. When you cropped the image, it changed the whole meaning from the original. What a genius idea to focus on something that I would not have imagined to crop. It reminds me of those silhouette street art or shadow graffitis.
The other way I would have cropped the image would have just cropped the bicyclist and his shadow. Maybe that would not turn out as good as I think it might be. But I think the way you cropped only his shadow is so much better and creative. I love it. You have a great eye.
I do not have any suggestions for improvement. You did amazing with this assignment.
It’s funny that I should be in your group this week! When looking through the projects last week, yours caught my eye and I looked at it in detail!
I love the way you cropped the photo! In the original, the two people were swallowed up by their surroundings. Your cropped photo features the shadow alone and gets rid of all the extra, unnecessary background. I think the new image definitely gives a much different feeling – a feeling of solitude. A man on his bike, all alone, on a journey.
If I had to suggest another way to crop it, you could have cropped the man on his bike with his shadow, and it too would have gotten rid of extra background and given focus. But your photo, with the focus on the shadow alone, is much more interesting, in my opinion, and I wouldn’t change a thing.
I do not have any suggestions for improvement. I know in class we talked about giving the image someplace to go and you commented about halting the movement. But, in this case, I think it adds mystery to you photo about where the man is headed on his journey and I don’t feel like his movement is halted.
You did a fantastic job!!!!
