Before you listen to the music in this post, pause and look at the photo. What do yellow roses and tulips make you think of? What feelings and memories rise up? I have always loved tulips and roses. And yellow flowers give me a sense of warmth and joy, like sunlight. When I first saw this photo, I felt uplifted. I thought maybe someone received this bright bouquet for a birthday or anniversary.

Now, add the audio as you look at the photo. “Sad Trio” adds a somber, reflective mood, and offers a different context for the photo. For me, the music changes the meaning of the photo from warm and happy to mournful or melancholic. Traditionally, yellow roses are given in sympathy. I don’t know why, but maybe it is to brighten the spirits. For some people they might bring to mind sad memories or thoughts of someone they have lost. In this context, I wonder what you would see if the photo was pulled back. Maybe a scene from a celebration of life gathering?
Hi Angela, I also agree, its amazing how influential music can be to transform the way you see a picture or even watch a movie. Music is powerful. Great post!
Hi Angela,
I initially thought that the flowers were jolly, and after hearing the music, to me they still are. I lost my brother a year ago and the music definitely got me sad. Whether the meaning is in fact to give them some joy or not, I like that meaning. It took me a while to get here, but I think that the sadness comes from the happiness you felt when they were around. I remember happy memories and they make me sad. These bright and cheery colors can absolutely be joyful and still convey sadness. Excellent choice! I think I will buy some yellow roses for myself soon.
Joel, I’m so sorry to hear about your brother. I lost my stepmom a few weeks ago, so I understand your grief. In fact, I think that’s why I was drawn to the yellow flowers for this assignment. Peace to you as you work through the grief process.
Angela
