“Sunrise or sunset: If you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all,” is something my dad would say when I’d tell him about my New Year’s Day plans. I have it set every year, for the last four years: my partner and I wake up an hour before sunrise, stretch, and make the drive to the nearest beach. Then we take out our blankets, for sitting and huddling, and we wait. A picture wouldn’t do it justice, it couldn’t capture that initial flash of gold as it peaks just over the watery horizon. It just can’t and, frankly, if I move, I’ll miss so much more than just that sunrise.
See, it’s more than just seeing the sun rise on the first day of the new year. It’s also about that moment when it feels like the whole world is holding its breath and quietly cheering on the day. Sometimes there are clouds and sometimes it’s a lot colder than we could have anticipated. I fell for the song first, because it reminded me of that anticipation of watching a sunrise, of a sunset, and of those quiet moments in-between its travels. The image puts everything into perspective.
Even though the image may not be from Florida, or even a beach, its colors are familiar.
Cynthia, what a beautiful photo you chose for the Media Lab 2 assignment. In your post you shared how much sunrises mean to you and your partner, and how at the start of a New Year you go to the closet beach and what the sun come up.
I also agree sunrises are amazing. There is nothing more peaceful and calming then to be at the beach and watch the sun come up at the beginning of a new day. Another thing I like about sunrises is how the colors of the sun paint a magnificent array of colors on the sky. It is as if the rays from the sun are paint brushes that provides gentle touches of red, orange and baby blue written so poetically on the sky’s canvas. So as you can tell I love the photo your picked for this blog.
As for the audio clip, I was not able to hear the audio. I am not sure if the issue was on my end or if there was some issue with the clip. The audio clip also had 00 in the playback bar so I am not sure if anything recorded was published to the website. Although, I did not hear the audio, I can imagine you picking an audio file that had beautiful sounds of the beach and of ocean waves crashing onto the shore.
I thought your photo was excellent but I was not able to audio that you picked to go with the photo. Everything else in your blog post was great. You content and format was good and your met the requirement for the post. Great job and I would love to eventually hear the audio you picked for the photo once the audio file issue is resolved.
REPOST: I had a few typos in my first post.

Hi Cynthia!
As someone who grew up with a family member who used to enjoy taking photographs of sunrises and sunsets, I can agree that those moments in time are enchanting and something one does not want to miss. I have to say that your father was incorrect, because though the colors may look similar for each passing day, every sunrise and sunset is different in its own way, especially if you consider where you take the opportunity to view them from.
The picture chosen does an excellent job of reminding me just how colorful a sunrise and sunset can be. The sunset pictured here is very vibrant in the colors of the last remaining light from the sun as the darkness of night begins to take over. It gives me a sense of peace while viewing it; a reminder that another day’s work is done.
I unfortunately had some trouble being able to play the audio, as it does not appear it could connect to the post very well. Though the link was broken, I was able to copy and paste it into my web browser in order to hear what was to be provided with this image.
What I was able to find seemed to fit perfectly well with the idea of a sunrise. The audio first starts off very peacefully, and then picks up in tempo as though to coax the listener into a state of expectation. This changes the meaning of the photo, as even though it was originally an image of a sunset that signaled a day’s end, the audio allows for a transition from ending to beginning. Now, with the audio, the image easily appears to be more of a sunrise, and the feelings of a new day dawning can be felt immensely.
Though this post was primarily about a sunrise and new beginnings, I believe that a more mellow sounding audio file would have also fit this image perfectly. Giving the chance to enhance the initial impression I had of this image, of a day winding down.
