The image Vienna – Rathus Christmas Market by charley1965 reminds me of how Christmas time feels like the most happiest time of year. I believe the best memories come from window shopping at Christmas Markets. Looking at all the different booths that are selling cute little trinkets and trying to eat all the different food stalls. The first time I attended a Christmas Market was in New York City in 2011. There were many colorful Christmas ornaments and souvenirs as far as the eye can see. Looking at this image made me think how I missed out on Germany’s Christmas Market last December.

When pairing the music Memories of Better Times by gurdonark with the image, it makes it seem like I want to slow down and relax. Enjoying the moment. Usually, around the holidays, it feels very rushed, fast paced, and busy. The calm piano playing is a nice touch to make it seem like I am actually at a real Christmas Market and this music is playing in the background while window shopping. Even though the image looks like a lot is going on and so many things to look at, I feel like the calm music helps balance it out. Also, it is a coincidence the song title Memories of Better Times fits perfectly with what I want to feel when I am listening to this music and while looking at the picture. Remembering the happier times in life.

HOPE FOR THE BEST

This whimsical picture reminded me why I loved reading  “Love in the Night”, a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, earlier this week.  The story completely ferried me to the southern coast of France in the spring of 1916, a year before the Russian Revolution. With Fitzgerald’s vivid imagery, it is hard not to be transported into another world.  “Love in the Night” basks in all the romantic heart-string pulling and discovery of “First Love.”  I would describe it as “Young Love” where everything feels perfect for one brief moment, resulting the desire to recapture that feeling again and again.

I read reviews calling Fitzgerald’s love story “cheesy” and “unrealistic”.  Admittedly, I am a romantic, but I don’t devour Harlem Romance novels or “live” for the next Hallmark movie.  So, why did this love story touch me?  It is as the whimsical song represented above says, “I hope for the best”.  I chose to see the world through rose-colored glasses.  As children, we are born believing in the rosy view of life.  Little kids see the wonder all around, waking up each day to happily embrace new possibilities.  But over time, we start to remove our rose-colored glasses for periods of time.  And eventually some of us begin forgetting to pick them up from the nightstand in the morning.  Some might argue that “society is broken” and putting on those glasses blinds you to happenings in the real world.  But, rose-colored glasses aren’t blindfolds.   They don’t prevent you from seeing sadness or pain.  Choosing to wear the glasses isn’t an act of denial, but a deep belief in hope.

In Fitzgerald’s story, a moment of true happiness was created by the couple’s love.  And reflecting that they once knew happiness, inspired them to want to feel that love again.  It was hope that crossed their paths again several years later.  Perhaps ironically,  Fitzgerald’s life was darkened by alcoholism, money problems, and the mental illness of his wife.  But I think that when Fitzgerald wrote this story, he willingly slipped on colored glasses.   Like me, he chose to see the world through rose-colored glasses deciding to hope for the best.

First Round, First Minute

Ding! Round one – BOOM!  Within minutes, the fight is over!

The photo shown above is a fight between Muhammad Ali and Manny Pacquiao.  As a huge fan of Muhammad Ali, I wanted to share this powerful photo of him in the ring.  I chose this photo for several reasons.  Although Muhammad Ali was the greatest professional fighter of all times, he was more than a boxer. He was also a philanthropist and social activist.  He was a great fighter in the ring and outside of it. Outside of the ring, he fought for what he believed in.

The audio file Jazzy Eve of Heavy Seas by Wired Ant was the perfect pairing to me for this photo. The audio starts out with a ding followed by a big BOOM!! After the boom, there is this metallic chiming sound as if someone got punched so hard that the only thing they see are stars as they lie flat on the canvas. The song repeats this cadence a few more times before going into a sweet melody of trumpet sounds with the crashing weaves heard in the background. The audio file reminded me of Muhammad Ali’s boxing career but also his life as a man.

Muhammad Ali gave more to this world then just his boxing career. He also gave the world a legacy that will live forever.

“A man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life.”

When 2 became 6

My name is Jillyann Sanchez-Herman and my wife and I share a beautiful home with our four children who ages range from ages 3, 8, 13, and 18 years old. Libraries have been my life passion as I have spent twenty five years working in libraries throughout Florida from Miami all the way to Tallahassee.Since 2018 we have been foster parents and we ended up adopting two beautiful children a three year old girl and a 8 year old boy. The 13 year is my wife’s grandson that she adopted when he was 5 years old. The 18 year old came to live with us so he could be close to his 8 year old brother. We do hope in the future to help more children as we are passionate about helping children in the foster care system get a forever home.

When I not working at the FSU Law Library I’m running around town to baseball games or soccer games which ever one is in season and it is a wonderful time for my kiddos and I to spend quality time. School events also keep us busy between selling cookies or going to science fairs or a parent teacher meeting it is never a dull moment within our big family but I wouldn’t have it any other way !

Some of my hobbies include reading travel blog posts and following the latest sneakers about to release. My wife and I love to travel by ourselves and with our kids but unfortunately now in the times of Covid I’m left traveling through travel blogs. I have been interested in sneakers since I was 8 years old and I just love all the styles and colors that come out daily.

I’m currently pursuing my Masters of Arts in Information and I will be graduating in the Summer of 2022.I can’t wait to graduate since I have been pursuing this dream of becoming a librarian on and off for over 20 years ! Once, I get my degree I intend on applying for any public library Librarian jobs with my ultimate goal being a Head Librarian running my own branch. Throughout the years I have enjoyed helping library patrons with locating library materials as well teaching them about library resources.

Beginnings & Endings ~ Mystery & Beauty

Sunrise – the arriving light marks the beginning of a new day full of mystery.
Is it promising or foreboding?

Sunset – the departing light shares a burst of color or fades from gray to black.
Does the mysterious darkness bring rest, fear or loneliness?

This photo caught my eye for a few reasons. The curving angle of the clouds and hillside, the contrast of the sky and the silhouetted trees, and because I am unceasingly enthralled by the endless variety and beauty of sunrises and sunsets.

The audio file adds to the mystery of the dark spaces in the photo, the awe of the beautiful colors, and the quiet peacefulness of the sunrise/set moment.

I have a love for vintage audio. I long for the days of spending an hour or more in record stores as a kid looking for something interesting. I have hundreds of records today, so it was natural for me to hunt for an image that shows my hobby. The sound, while not always something you hear on a record, especially a brand new, clean, well pressed one, is still reminiscent of those record players I had as a kid when I could not afford the high-end stuff and bought dollar records out of the used bin at the shop.

Wonderland?

Wonderland. Dangerous -or- Beautiful?

For the photo I chose “Bailey Covered Bridge” by Algorithms Riven the photo was an interesting combination of gray scale and the bright yellows, blues, and purple hues. Something seems slightly ominous with the photo but the colors are so bright that it seems too pretty to be dangerous. The composition was off kilter and one that you can’t help but look around the photo even though your eyes get drawn back into the middle.

I chose the song “Herat 7” by ERH because it was slightly eerie but also beautiful and serene. Though you can tell something isn’t quite normal, I found that it added to the composition. I named it “Wonderland?” since the verdict is still out whether it is dangerous or not. Afterall Wonderland was both magical AND dangerous.

Climbing the Mountain!

Hi everyone!

My name is Joel Vasquez and I am in the final stretch of my MSI program.

I am currently lucky enough to be a branch manager in Nassau County despite having an incomplete degree.

https://nassaureads.com/

I live in Yulee, Florida at the moment but I spent most of my life in New York City, specifically, the Bronx. I worked in a College Library as an assistant for roughly 9 years while I was slowly but surely finishing my undergraduate degree. I ended up living in Japan for a year and moving back on and off for a couple of years at a time but for now I am settled in the land of beaches and no snow…

As far as degrees go, I studied East Asian Studies and received a Minor degree in Japanese. I taught English for a bit and eventually moved back due to some family emergencies but I am trying to make the best of it!

Some fun facts about my traveling life:

I have climbed Mt. Fuji and my clearest memory of it was the smell! (Plumbing on mountains is interesting…)

I have lived in Kobe, Kanagawa and Tokyo and somehow managed to miss out on traveling to Hokkaido (I love snow and I am denied this luxury by Florida). I studied Cultural Informatics in Kobe University!

I have been getting into quite a few creative projects at work so I am definitely looking forward to learning some new tricks in this course. I am looking forward to bringing some of what I learn to my job. I can already see this is going to be a fun time since I use WordPress for the website at my job as well!

Myself somewhere on Fuji (ignore my star friends haha):

I look forward to working with you all! I ay be finishing my degree but the climb continues!

A little glimpse into my life

Hi everyone! My name is Cameron Chisolm and this is my second semester in the MSIT program. So far it’s been going very well and I learned quite a bit. My family currently resides in Orlando, Florida but I grew up as a military child so I lived all over the country. I also completed my undergrad at FSU so I’ve been in Tallahassee for a while and I’m ready to travel and see what else the world has to offer.

In my free time, I enjoy watching tutorials about graphic design. I’m really interested in the creative side of technology because it allows you to have the freedom to make anything you want. I’m still a beginner but I would one day like to maybe create concert merchandise or album cover for artists. I listen to music almost 24/7 so most of my designs are catered around it. Right now, I’ve been listening to Adele’s newest album “30” on repeat. I’m excited to learn more about digital media in this course!

It’s Never Too Late….

Hi, everyone! My name is Angela Wylie. I started my coursework in the Masters in Information program in Fall 2018, and I’m slowly working through the program one class at a time. At this point, I have five classes to go. Last semester, I completed an internship with The Ringling Museum. This was a wonderful opportunity to develop my skills and knowledge in cataloging and utilizing controlled vocabulary and name authorities. I have a strong interest in working with museum collections, so this was a valuable experience for me.

By way of background, I graduated from FSU with a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs in 1990. I was born and raised near Orlando, Florida, but I’ve been a permanent resident of Tallahassee since 1990. I live here with my husband and daughter (a freshman at FSU) and our sweet puppy, Reese. For more than 30 years, I have worked as a paralegal, primarily in the private sector. My work experience ranges from all types of litigation (federal, state, administrative) to legislative practice and regulatory work, with lots of research and writing. I have always loved reading and research and spent lots of time at the Orlando Public Library as a child. My work experience, combined with my interest in reading and research, made the MSI program a natural choice for an advanced degree. I’m enjoying my studies and we will see where it takes me!

In addition to reading, I love to travel. I have been blessed to visit a number of places over the years, including Hawaii, California, New York, Wyoming, Washington (state as well as D.C.), Vancouver, and Jamaica. Although we have not traveled much in the past two years, we did take a memorable trip to France in 2018 – a first trip to Europe for all three of us.

Angela at the Notre Dame Cathedral Paris, July 2018

I am excited about this class for a number of reasons. I think the digital media skills we will learn will have practical application in a variety of work settings and for personal use. I enjoy photography, so I look forward to learning some new ways to edit and use my photos and videos in this class. And in addition to gaining more practical technical skills, I anticipate the creative opportunities afforded by digital media. This class offers a great balance between the practical and creative.

Wishing all of you a great semester! I look forward to getting to know you.
