What do pugs and trains have in common? They sound EXACTLY the same!
My sister has two adorable pugs with just the sweetest personalities but, and I can not state this enough, they are LOUD. And I don’t mean because they bark or anything, I mean because they breathe. That’s it. They could be doing literally nothing at all and I swear, it sounds like a train going through the room. Now they’re more than cute enough to make up for the noise – or at least they are until it’s time to sleep and then it becomes nearly impossible to drown them out. It’s gotten to the point that when I visit my sister I have to be in an entirely different room from the pugs with the door firmly closed to have any chance of peace.
That’s exactly the sentiment I wanted to convey by combining this image of a cute but looming pug with the sounds of a steam engine at work because no matter how many times I explain it, I don’t think people really get it. It’s not until you have both the image and sound together (or you’re visiting my sister’s house) that you can really understand the strangeness of a small, cute dog making more noise than a locomotive. I listened to so many train sounds to find just the right one and I think I nailed it – just play it on loop while trying to go to sleep and you’ll have the full experience!
The combination of image and audio together definitely transformed the individual meaning of both to help illustrate a subjective feeling that can be hard to explain or understand. Because I can assure you, my sister doesn’t feel the same way about her pugs as I do. But if I show her this, she might just get it!
Hi Linnea – What a creative Idea and yes, the train sounds very much like a pug! My overall impression is that the photo, sound byte, and blog post all work together very well to get your point across in a fun and informative way. Your commentary made me laugh! I can’t think of anything that I’d do differently. Nice job!
Thank you, Linnea, for the nice post. The Picture of this Pup is cute. I can definitely understand how the combination of the image of a cute but looming pug and the sound of a steam engine can help convey the unique experience you have with your sister’s pugs. It’s interesting how sometimes it takes a combination of visuals and audio to truly capture and convey a certain feeling or situation. While pugs and trains may not have much in common in terms of their physical characteristics, your creative approach highlights the unexpected similarity you perceive in the sounds they produce. I’m sure your sister will appreciate the sentiment behind your artwork and that it brings a sense of understanding to both of you.
Initial thought: “that’s different, how did they do that?” I’m curious and trying to imagine scenarios that explain the how – then I read the author’s description, and it made sense. The image with audio confused me. Guided by the title I’m thinking of some kind of superhero reference and cannot see a connection until reading the thought process behind it. Your description tied it together. I didn’t know this about Pugs, so I lack frame of reference. With that thought, a different audio would be a challenge for me. When I think of the author’s description – the unexpected pose and moments leading up to the photo, I think audio that compliments the moment would have to be a little whimsical? A welcome surprise? What does that sound like?
Hi, Linnea! I loved reading through your post while simultaneously listening to the audio you selected. Before reading the audio caption, I was convinced it was of a pug breathing. I suppose they do sound just alike! I am a dog lover and will do almost anything for them, but having to sleep with the noise would be a little difficult. 🙂 I enjoyed the comparison of the cute photo of the pug to the loud, strange train sounds. I also think your formatting of the picture, audio, and text was clean and easy to follow.
