On the left, I have a caricature portrait of my parents and me that we had done at the South Florida Fair in January 2021. I recently discovered that my mom had stored the original, physical copy, and it is now ruined. Luckily, I had a photo of it, though it isn’t perfect. This assignment was the perfect moment for me to edit it into the photo on the right. I had to crop the photo, eliminating the excess around the art piece and making it look almost as great as the original. We might not have the physical copy, but now the art is, in a way, digitally preserved for my family to keep. I also auto-edited the image to make the colors pop out better, since the picture of the portrait was taken a few phones ago, and the quality wasn’t great either. There was no need to apply the golden rule, since the aim was to create a digital archive of a damaged portrait. This was achieved by cropping out the area outside the portrait and brightening the colors that were less vibrant than the original.
These things always mystify me! How can they look so much like us but also not even close? I am sorry that the original is lost forever. But you are lucky that you had a decent image of it to look back on. Editing this was a challenge, but it looks like you did a great job. I can barely even tell it is behind plastic. The way it’s cropped even looks as though you changed the point of view a little. While the art goes right up to the sides of the frame, which isn’t ideal, salvaging a special memory is totally worth it!
Hi Jazmin, I love that you used this project to restore an image that is special to you. Do you plan to print the image at some point? My only suggestion would be to maybe crop a bit off the top since you can see some of the plastic through the light reflecting. You did a great job with this assignment and I really like that you also took the time to edit the lighting and colors!
Hey Jazmin! I just wanted to apologize that the original was ruined, but I am glad you had a picture to refer back to. You did a great job at cropping the image, and I honestly can’t tell that there was plastic covering it after editing. By cropping it, you were able to remove the distracting background. Overall, your final edit looks great. I would only suggest that you crop the top just a little more for aesthetic reasons because the paper looks wrinkled.
