My dog isn’t a fan of the cold, so putting a sweater on him is a must! I snapped a photo of him outside in the grass, and although it was a great photo of him, he could really capture the spotlight more with some editing!
The original image was a bit messy, with distractions like his shadow and uneven lighting. I adjusted the temperature to cooler colors and decided to use less contrast. I also made sure to crop the photo make him the focal point. I cropped the image using the “rule of thirds.” Instead of keeping him in the center, I positioned him at the top right intersection of the imaginary grid. This made him instantly more dynamic. Cropping also allowed me to remove his shadow and some of the distracting background.
The edited image is much better! He is definitely the main character now.
When looking for an image, I chose to look through pictures through my photo gallery. It was very easy to choose my pets as inspiration. This image looks even deeper now that it looks like he is looking out into the far distance.
Heather, your dog is precious! I agree that your cropping brought the focus on him; especially removing his shadow from the frame. Since he was front and center in the original, I wouldn’t necessarily say the meaning has changed with the crop, but that the way you feature your dog as the focal point is different. Your use of contrast to make the background less distracting was very effective.
Another way I would’ve cropped this photo would be to trim the right and left edges to truly fit him into the middle third. I personally would have gone with the warmer temperature, but I can see how the cooler color scheme gives the sensation that the weather is cold, which complements the sweater he is wearing.
Daw! Your dog is such a star. The editing was really good and I do like your adjusting of the temperature of the colors. Honestly the image feels colder relaying the chill your dog felt.
I feel there might have been a wasted opportunity to play with your dog’s shadow in the image. I wonder how the image would feel if you shifted cropping more to the right and had your dog set up on the left side of the image and had the shadow be more prominent.
I love the change in brightness when the image is cropped! It really helps bring more focus to your dog and makes him stand out even more.
