Happy lunar new year! A New year has come again. Have you seen a sunrise on January 1st? There is nothing as wonderful as watching the sunset in the new year (and wishing for a great year). The moment right now I’m writing this blog, it feels like December seems too far away. However, the end of the year will come back very fast as usual. Can you believe that January is almost over? I chose the Carousel of Life (Merry-go-round) by Joe Hisaishi from Howl’s Moving Castle, a Japanese animation film, for the audio. The sun rises, and the sun sets. A day comes and another day comes. Time goes fast which also means life goes fast. I think the sunrise and sunset are like a merry-go-round that never stops.
When I paired the sunrise image with the Carousel of Life by Joe Hisaishi audio, it feels somewhat profound and mysterious (and thinking, “I wish time would go slowly”). The audio here is the symphony version, but if you listen to the original piano version, it gives more of that feeling.
A very Happy Lunar New Year to you Jenny! I had never heard the piece of music you had selected before and I really liked the symphony version. I enjoyed how the tune starts out slowly, but establishes the feeling of dawn or start and then moves into the more melodic and circus carousel tune. In keeping in the carousel theme with the sun rising and setting, I like the cyclical idea of it all, a constant thing that happens or continues on.
When I see an image of the ocean (a thing and place I love to be) I often imagine nature sounds or white noise, a rolling wave, or a gentle hoot of a bird, so having it mixed with a symphonic circus melody was a different experience for me and altered my perception of the sunrise over the ocean. Thanks for making me think differently about how I view the ocean. In keeping with the way you paired your audio here, I think you could easily add in a rock or punk song as well to alter the meaning of the photo or add more pep into the idea of a sunrise as the start of a new day.
Hello Jenny,
The first thing I said when I started the music was it sounded like the start of a show from the 60s. I also initially just listened I felt like I was in France on a boat listening to music while going down a canal, just based on the music. I did not honestly view it from your perspective. After reading your view point, I love how you pair the music with the photo. It is quite funny how we could view the same photo or music and have many perspectives. I love the aspect of the never-ending sunrise and sunset. When I see this photo I could see it paired with a wave-chasing sound with seagulls and other birds in the distance. The sound of waves always conveys that sense of calm for me as a Florida native.
