I love the ambiance of a coffee house.  The smell of fresh brewed coffee filling the room and subdued, jazzy music playing  in the background makes for the perfect place to relax, knit, and chat with friends.  Visits to many such retreats inspired The Wool Cafe podcast.  My passion is wool.  I belong to a loosely-knit community of fiber artists from whom I constantly draw new ideas.  Its members are so nice and always willing to help with projects.  It would be delightful to sit with many of them over coffee and chat.  My list of potential guests is really endless, from shepherds to owners of yarn mills, indie dyers, designers and creative hobbyists.

Jen, from Whispering Pines Farm, is a perfect example of that friendly and supportive fiber-arts appassionata.  I met Jen at the Rhinebeck Sheep Festival in 2019 where I discovered her beautiful, Shetland-handspun yarn.  I immediately fell in love with the soft texture!  Jen started her own video podcast and asked me to join her in Episode 7 to talk about the shawl I made with her yarn.  So, I selected that same episode 7 for my album art as a nod to her.

The opening of my introduction has the pouring of coffee beans and the background chatter of a coffee house. These are common sounds that create the atmosphere of the setting. Background music is always playing if you take time to notice it. I wanted a track that would give the right mood to the podcast and accurately reflect what you might hear in your local coffee shop. If successful, you can even smell the brew!

For the Haunted Happenings podcast I used introduction music to set the stage of the podcast. Then had the music fade out and intro my first voice narrations ontop of soft music. Then added the sound effect of a door creaking to invoke the feeling of the story starting. I finally added another voice narration ontop of different music to give it a creepy vibe. Between all of the effects I had the sound fade out to avoid it sounding the transitions from sounding too choppy.

This podcast makes use of sound effects, voice overs, and music. I used sound effects to quickly ground the listener into the cooking environment. I chose a few familiar kitchen sound effects and placed them in the order that would evoke the soundscape of someone cooking a meal – a drawer opening, a knife, chopping sounds, and a sizzling skillet. At the end, I added the sound of an egg cracking quickly followed by more sizzling. I had these play as the simple, unobtrusive background music fades in and gains volume. I then ducked the audio slightly to accommodate for my welcoming narration.
