About Me- Aedan

Hi, my name is Aedan Bennett and I am in my last semester ever at FSU (hopefully). Like probably all of us, I am getting my Masters in Library Sciences, but I hope to get a Masters of Arts instead of Sciences because I actually started as a Literature major, so those courses make my degree an Arts degree. I work part time at TSC (Tallahassee State College) as a Librarian. Here’s our official page:

https://www.tsc.fl.edu/academics/academic-divisions/library/about-the-library

I spend most of my time there, at school, or at home doing school online, but when I’m not doing any of those things, my biggest hobbies are reading, going to the springs and parks around town, and running TIRA: the Tallahassee Immigrant Rights Alliance. The picture below is me and my girlfriend Katy who helps run it too.

Here’s a link to an article written about our latest action: https://fightbacknews.org/articles/tallahassee-organizers-rally-after-city-commission-and-tpd-attempt-to-illegally

I’m excited mostly for this to be my last semester. I actually failed this class last semester because I read the instructions wrong for the last paper and wrote about a different topic and my teacher completely failed me! So here I am again, but I hope to learn more of the things that slipped through the cracks last semester.

The Land Before John.

Hello to anyone that comes upon this in class! My name is John Gonzalez, and I currently reside in Miami. It’s a beautiful locale with plenty to see and do, and is much more preferable to the winter – so long as you don’t mind a housing crisis. I’m currently working at Florida International University, acting as the Library Manager for the FIU College of Law. This allows me to mix project management with user services, leading a team in ensuring our space is clean, safe for our students, and has all the resources law students need! When I’m not studying or working, I’m usually with family, playing video games, or reading – though lately, I’ve been stepping into the field of Dungeons and Dragons (curse Stranger Things!).

I’m also lucky enough to be in my final semester of the MLIS program here at FSU. I’m particularly excited about this class, as it will allow me to finish my certification requirements in User Services! I consider myself a creative person, but I am really lacking in technical skills; my fine-hand motor skills are probably at the level of a baby’s first meal on their own. So I’m hoping we can utilize tools that will create beautiful work that is original and fun. Looking forward to working with you all!

it’s me, whalen

(prescript: while i know this is a master’s class, my blogging experience is casual a la my tumblr, and lowercase is just enjoyable. i’m staying in that cant for this post, but if it’s too unprofessional, i’ll step outta it)

hello folks! my name is whalen, and i’m pretty fresh on the block in this master’s degree (just turned 20 years old, gosh). i’m still in tallahassee from my bachelor’s in ict there, and i’m just about to start a job at the community college’s nursing library. i want to be a public librarian when i grow up after i graduate, and especially want to be involved with events, outreach, and yes, media.

in my spare time, i’m largely a game developer, ranging from hours-long adventure video games for sale on steam to piddly little physical games that are mostly toying with mechanics. i’m also the vice president of fsu’s video game development club, devlup @ fsu. i like to explore and play around with how people interact with the world, both in my career and out of it. if anyone else here is also interested in board game design, reach out to me, i want to find my people.

a rapid fire list of other descriptors: artist, tea drinker, cuddler, likes premier league soccer but doesn’t yell at it, enjoys a good crossword, reads sci-fi short stories from the mid-century, mildly disabled (maybe a cyst on my spinal cord?), learned a significant portion of higher-level vocabulary from magic: the gathering, low-brow taste in food, astronomy fan, astrology hater, wears blankets when on the computer like an old lady in her rocking chair.

Hello, Jazmin Here!

Hello, everyone! My name is Jazmin Jimenez. I live in Pahokee, Florida. I am currently working toward my Master of Science in Information. I work full-time at the library in my hometown, where I serve as the Children and Teens Specialist. I love connecting with the kids who come by, providing the essentials of a library, building bonds with my community, and being there when they need me. My favorite part of my job is programming. Lately, I have been loving creating arts and crafts with the kids that we display around the library.

I also work part-time at BRIDGES at Pahokee, a resource center. I am learning that they do so much more in the community than I previously knew! They provide dozens of resources for new parents, children in schools, and the community at large.

A hobby I have been loving lately is journaling! I have been using a Hobonichi Weeks journal, and it has been really fun. Looking through everyone’s posts, I see a few of us journal, enjoy vlogging, and take pictures! That is so exciting! I have been loving collecting all things stationery, writing about my day, using my endless sticker collection, making lists, writing about the books I’m reading, and gluing pictures of my family and friends. I have also been loving going to the movies! The entire class interests me, as this year I hope to be more comfortable with technology, specifically videos. I hope to gain more knowledge of digital media tools to become more tech-savvy and more comfortable using different resources.

Hello class!

My name is Alyssa and I live over on the Space Coast of Florida in a small city called Rockledge. I’m in my second year of the MIS program at FSU, where I’m studying for a career in librarianship. Going hang-in-hand with that, I currently work part-time with Brevard Public Libraries doing circulation. I’ve only been working there for a few months but it’s already been an incredible experience.

I’m not one for professional photos, but I love my digicam and preserving memories. The picture to the right was taken when my friends and I were visiting Austin’s Coffee in Orlando on their Jazz Night. On the left is my best friend Jojo and I’m on the right. I used to live in Orlando while getting my undergraduate degrees from UCF. I got a BA in English (creative writing) and a BS in psychology. Creative writing is one of my biggest hobbies, and one of my lifelong dreams is to become a published fiction author. In my spare time, I also enjoy walking around my local park, and doing various arts & crafts activities like painting, sewing, and wood-burning.

Like many others in this field, I also love reading. At any given time, I always have a book I’m working through, and I won’t be stopping anytime soon, especially since working in a library has doubled my TBR list. Right now, I’m reading a novel called Good Spirits at the recommendation of one of my coworkers. My friends and I also have a book club to keep each other accountable on our reading goals and to discuss books.

My knowledge is a bit limited when it comes to computers, editing, or digital media. That being said, I find editing photos to be interesting (it goes hand-in-hand with photography, after all) and I’ve dabbled in it on occasion. I’m hoping this class will help me improve my skills and to hopefully have fun in the process!

A Permanent Student?

“It’s your road and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.” – Rumi.

Hey Everyone! My nama is Lisa. Somehow, I have lived in Tallahassee for the last 15 years; I still don’t know how that happened. Currently, I am a PhD Candidate in the Religion Dept at FSU with an expected graduation date of Spring 2026. (If I suddenly disappear from this course in a couple of weeks, my suspicions that a doctoral defense will kill me were confirmed.) I am slightly amused that I just mentioned one of the banished words for this course by answering the question of what I am studying. I work as the Undergraduate Academic Program Specialist in FSU’s Math Dept.

I grew up on 500 acres in mid-Michigan and earned my BA in history and French from UM-Flint. I paid for my undergrad degree by milking cows. I moved to Tampa in 2002, earned my MLIS at USF, and was a GA for the department. I spent a couple of years in both Gainesville and Overland Park, KS where I worked as a school library media specialist before I in landed here in Tally. It was supposed to be “temporary” move. (For those not “in the know,” we are home to the world’s strongest magnet, and it keeps people from leaving and hurricanes from landing!) During this time, I also earned my MDiv from Asbury Theological Seminary. Because, why not?

My hobbies align with every other middle-aged lady blog post on the Internet: hiking, gardening, reading, cooking. Last summer my husband and I combined our passion for walking and our preference for “under tourism” to complete the Wicklow Way. It was a success as we saw thousands of sheep and only one other American!

Something that interests me about this class is that when I took its ancestral equivalent in one of my past lives and at that time it was mostly about PowerPoint. That leads me to why I am here this semester. What I hope to gain from this course to lose some of my obsolesce and antiquarian ways. I just spent the last 3 years reading the diaries of 19th century priests. Since I am not adjunct teaching for FSU this semester, I have some “free time” with only a full-time job and a manuscript to edit. I am really looking forward to being creative and learning some new skills with you.

New Year, Same Me!

Leading my first storytime at work!

Hello everyone! My name is Gwen Roberts, and I’m currently in my penultimate semester at FSU for the MSI program. My academic background is actually in the social sciences, as I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the New College of Florida in Sarasota. However, I’m happy to be getting my graduate degree in a field that facilitates another one of my interests, librarianship and information literacy. Currently I work for the Broward County Public Library System as a Librarian Trainee, on track to becoming a fully salaried Librarian when I graduate in August! I mainly work in Adult Services right now, but at some point I’d like to be a Youth Librarian as I feel like my enthusiasm and penchant for silliness suits that environment better. I live in Sunrise, but I’m actually from Trinidad, which is a place so rich in cultural diversity and natural beauty I can’t even begin to describe it.

I’m very excited for this class because I’ve been creatively inclined my entire life and really enjoy making art as well as engaging with it. I wrote my undergraduate thesis on Korean hip-hop music and cross-cultural expression, and for one of my classes last semester I managed to make an entire book trailer using only Powerpoint. It was quite possibly one of the most interesting experiences I’ve had making art since Powerpoint is not really a software for doing animation, but I really enjoyed trying to make it work. Hopefully this time I will learn how to use tools that are actually intended to be used for video editing however. I look forward to honing my (very elementary) skills in editing and digital media creation, and having a creative outlet. I’m also really excited to see what kind of unique artwork everyone else produces! Aside from writing about art and using unusual programs to make it, I also enjoy reading and playing video games, in the hopes of possibly making a game of my own some day.

What’s this? A new face?

Hello!

I’m Savannah Whitby and this is my last semester of my MSI degree here at FSU. I am so happy to be almost finished with this. It has been a fun ride and I have learned so much in my time here. I am so ready to be finished though. This degree didn’t necessarily need to be finished this soon but I like to rip off bandaids when I am able to. I started as a librarian in Volusia County at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library almost three years ago now and I love it so much I had to do everything I could to pave the way for advancing. I am currently working in Youth Services and I don’t ever see me leaving. Storytime is truly my passion and I am unsure I could ever give it up. I left teaching elementary school to start this job and I will never even look back. New Smyrna Beach has always been my home and I have never wanted to live anywhere else. I am so proud to give back to the community that raised me by helping families engage with literacy both in our library and outside of it.

You will be surprised to read that my main hobby has always been reading. Currently I enjoy reading fantasy and romance novels and any mix of the two genres. My Goodreads is flooded with titles I have read and those I am currently reading (when I remember to update it, which is not often, I must admit).

I also spend an inordinate amount of time at Disney World and I am absolutely what you would call a Disney adult. We have been visiting the house of mouse since I was a small child and I have had an annual pass for most of my life. We enjoy our time there and will continue to do so for a long time.

My hope for this class is to hone my skills where digital media is concerned. I have some experience from when I was teaching and in my current position. Since this is my only class this semester I have more time to dedicate to it. My second goal for this class is to have fun with it. It is too easy in many situations to get bogged down with the assigned task and forget to enjoy it.

Limestone and Libraries

Hey Everybody! My name is Kenny and I was born and raised in Miami-Dade County, Florida. An interesting thing about Miami is the Coral Castle. It is a monumental structure made from very large and heavy limestone blocks that one man claims to have built yet there is very little known as to how he did it. This picture is of me at El Tazumal, in Chalchuapa, El Salvador and is attributed to the Mayans.

I currently work for the Miami-Dade Public Library System where I am an assistant and working towards librarianship. It is my second semester here at FSU in the MSI program. In my undergrad, I studied fine art and used to photograph with film a lot. I do it less frequently these days, mostly due to cost. I like to collect old books and records as well and enjoy spending time in nature and exploring different cultures.

In this class, I hope to use my skills already obtained through years of photography and apply it to a more conventional and user-friendly design that aligns with the current trends in social media, communications, and libraries. I would also like to expand my knowledge and skills in video editing and production. I have done some in the past, but it has been a while. I am looking forward to working alongside everyone this semester and seeing how our ideas align.

“All that had happened and would happen was meant to be. Everything happens as it is meant to be.”

Hello! My name is Emma and I am a first year graduate student in the Information Science program. I am working to become a librarian after graduation, preferably in an academic setting. I am a third-generation FSU graduate and I received my undergrad degree in Studio Art in 2021. I lived in Tallahassee for almost 20 years and moved to Jacksonville, FL in 2020. I enjoy reading and building my own library collection in my spare time. My favorite books are Kristin Lavransdatter (the title of this post is a quote from this book), Crime and Punishment, and Little Women. I am excited to take this class to build upon the technical skills I learned in my time studying digital media as an art form. I studied photography and photo editing, but I have very little knowledge of audio and video editing.

From a visit to the Nelson-Adkins Museum in Kansas City, MO, where I was able to see a piece from Monet’s Waterlilies

One of my favorite memories I have from my childhood is visiting Strozier Library with my dad when he was a PhD candidate in the early 2000’s. He would often bring me along to return books on the weekends while my mom was working and I loved walking with him through the towering rows of books and breathing in the smell of old books. As a college student, I often frequented Strozier late at night, enjoying the quiet opportunity to study, read, think, and develop my own beliefs and opinions as an adult. I hope as a librarian to contribute to the culture of independent thinking and the protection of information. I’m looking forward to growing as a student in this class and connecting with others in Information Science!
