I took this picture while on a trip to Zoo Miami with my wife, and at the time, I wasn’t thinking about framing. The original shot is of the tiger in the center of the photograph at full zoom, since it was pretty far away. After learning about the rule of thirds, I cropped the image so the tiger’s head and eyes are off-center in the upper-left quadrant, so he is looking out toward the horizon. The purpose is to create a more dynamic and engaging picture. This also removes the unnatural box higher up in the image and places the focus on the tiger, allowing you to use your imagination to see what he is looking at. I believe it adds a sense of mystery and wonder that the original image had less of. Furthermore, it being a closer shot also allows you to appreciate the tiger’s colors and fur much better and less focus on the trees. I enjoyed all the pictures I took that day, however, I do appreciate the change made to this one.

To Boldly Go…

I was drawn to this image because I have always loved science fiction, especially Star Trek, and the space shuttle program meant a lot to me growing up. When I look at the shuttle being carried on its own, there is a sense of calm and inspiration. It represents adventure and the excitement of exploring something bigger than ourselves. There is also a peaceful feeling to the image, almost like the moment before a journey begins, as the shuttle is being carried by the airplane.

The music I chose has a very different feeling on its own. It feels tense and a little dangerous, almost as if something could go wrong at any moment. When the audio is paired with the image, it changes how I see the shuttle being carried. Instead of just feeling adventurous, the image starts to feel risky. I have very vivid memories of the space shuttle Challenger explosion from when I was a kid, watching it live in class. Pairing these two together highlights how dangerous space travel really is and reminds me that becoming an astronaut means putting yourself in a potentially very dangerous situation where your life can be at risk.

Finding the Right Balance Through Education and Music

Hi everyone,

I’m Eddie, and I live in South Florida. I work at the Miami-Dade Public Library System in Miami Springs. Even though I don’t live in Miami Springs, I spend a lot of time there for work. I really enjoy being part of that community because the library is closely connected to the people it serves.

I’m a graduate student at Florida State University School of Information, pursuing a degree in Information Studies. I’m primarily interested in helping with digital literacy and how can libraries better support their communities.

At the Miami Springs Branch Library, I help people with reference questions and their technology needs. I also spend a lot of time working with children, leading storytimes and crafts, as well as basic technology classes that encourage learning and creativity. I try to help everyone who enters the library, and also during outreach as best as I can with all of their questions and basic tasks.

When I’m not working or studying, I enjoy singing. I’m a part-time member of the Master Chorale of South Florida, a 100-plus-member community choir. Singing with the chorale is a hobby that I love, which brings a balance to my academic and professional life when I am able to participate.

I’m hopeful to improve and learn new skills in blogging by practicing hands-on and am glad we are starting very simply and building from there. Also to learn from all of you and from reading your posts.
