When designing my podcast I decided on leaning into my interest in tabletop gaming and the vast fictional setting of Warhammer 40,000 universe. Considering the often intense feeling of the 40,000 universe I decide to use a heavy guitar riff for the introductory music that feeds into a dice roll sound effect for the transition to my introduction to the podcast itself. I took advantage of the Midjourney AI image generation to create a cover for the podcast with a fairly simple image of a cartoony table with dice falling over onto the table. “Failing Forward” as a title for the podcast refers to a table top gaming term where one fails a specific check but is still able to advance the plot forward, and that would play into the themes of the podcast. Moving the plot forward even though I might be mucking it up!

The Bridge Between the Ground and the Clouds

Original: “Returning to Palm Beach International Airport” by Connor Skaryd is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0.

I went with the image I took late last year of Palm Beach International Airport when I was returning from west palm beach. The original photo was taken from my plane seat and just trying to capture my return home to Florida and taking the image of the sunset and the sky with the beautiful clouds about their airport. the airport. There was no way for me to avoid catching the plane’s wing in the image, but it really doesn’t cover much.

The cropped version is really focused on the control tower. Unintentionally finding that it almost perfectly meets the bottom of the clouds with my angle, I zoomed in and narrowed the field of view from my phone’s camera to emphasize the sky about the tower and remove the airplane’s wing from the image.  I set the control tower to be at the bottom left intersection of the rule of thirds to really emphasize the sky. I set it to a more panoramic scale to really show the clouds and the deep red and oranges of the sunset. Making it so that the sun lit sky was the border between the ground and the clouds, that was then bridged by the air traffic control tower.

My goal with this edit is to make the air traffic control tower of the airport be a literal bridge to the sky in the image, while it is a metaphorical bridge to the sky, with the controllers in the tower guiding planes into the air. The main thing I wish I could change is having a better resolution and not having it so pixelated.

Making Light of the Horrific

I am always a fan of dark humor and this particular combination of media certainly scratches that itch. I was scrolling through the creative commons websites while listening to music and I was on a fairly upbeat song when I came across this image and I could not help but laugh at it. At that point I started my hunt across various creative commons audio websites to find just the right sound that would maximize the juxtaposition between it and the horrific nature of nuclear weapons. I eventually came across a creative commons instrumental version of “Oh, Christmas Tree” that got the effect I was looking for.

The image of the nuclear explosion of the Crossroads Baker Test is both informative and sobering, showing the terrible nature of weapons of mass destruction. This is hard juxtaposed with the well known and very positive feeling the Christmas song “Oh, Christmas Tree”. These two clashing media forms something that I hope can invoke feelings that would contrast against the horrific nature of nuclear weapons.

A Game Master and Librarian

Greeting my fellow scholars and seekers of knowledge! My name is Connor Skaryd. I was born in West Palm Beach, Florida and I spent most of my childhood and teenage years growing up in Martin County, Florida. After high school I decided that I was tired of the warm tropical weather and moved up to the city of Grand Forks, North Dakota to attend the University of North Dakota for my Bachelor’s Degree. Having survived sub-zero winters for my undergraduate degree and learning the feeling of your breath freezing in your mouth from the cold weather, I returned to Florida and through a long and complex series of events, I started working for the Martin County Library System. I currently work as the senior Library Specialist for the Palm City Library where I am functionally the assistant manager of the branch.

Outside of work one of my great passions is playing tabletop role playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, Call of Cthulhu, and Lancer. I have routinely fallen into the role of a “forever GM” and I find deep satisfaction running games and creating amazing stories with friends that we can enjoy together. I am excited for this class since learning about the use of digital media will be a huge boon for me since I work with digital media in both my professional and personal life. I want to learn the tools and systems that would help me advance my career and the gaming experience I give to my players.
