It spoke to the part of me that has always been fascinated by dreams and everything that remains mysterious about our experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Surrealism proper <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surrealist_Manifesto\">started in the 1920\u2019s<\/a> and probably has quite a few works in the public domain, I wanted to look further back, partially to be <em>sure<\/em> my image would be copyright-free and partially to find some art I had not seen before. I was very excited to find out about J. J. Grandville, a French illustrator who lived during the first half of the nineteenth century and <a href=\"https:\/\/publicdomainreview.org\/essay\/grandville-visions-and-dreams\/\">inspired many artists and authors<\/a> who came after him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The image you see here is called \u201cApocalypse at the Ballet,\u201d and I love it for a number of reasons, the primary one being that it\u2019s just <em>fun<\/em>. Everything in it seems like it\u2019s in motion, and I get the sense that Grandville genuinely enjoyed playing with similarities in forms here. It seems like the kind of fun you have when you let your mind wander while doodling on the side of your notebook. Another reason is that I love seeing different interpretations of an apocalypse. Whether it\u2019s literal or metaphorical, it\u2019s always revealing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When looking for an accompanying sound, I started browsing <a href=\"http:\/\/freesound.org\">freesound.org<\/a>\u2019s \u201cweird\u201d and \u201cexperimental\u201d tags to get some ideas. I figured I would find something in those places that could compliment surreal imagery well. Timbre\u2019s \u201c2024 Remix\u2026\u201d really emphasized the movement that felt so strong in Grandville\u2019s illustration. I\u2019m struggling to find the words to describe the music other than \u201cfast-paced\u201d and \u201celectronic.\u201d It reminds me of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyperpop\">hyperpop<\/a>, but I have no idea if that label is correct.
