The Island of Vampyr

Summary: This is a short snippet of a book about a man cursed to be a vampire who lives on an island that he has molded and grown into a massive tourist industry. The catch? #1 he’s vegan- he does whatever it takes to uphold this, finding that he can subsist off of Coconut water instead of blood. Catch #2 Nobody knows he’s a vampire- just a rich eccentric who owns a bed and breakfast- and he wants to keep it that way!

Children will be lulled to sleep by the soft voice of the story teller. I imagine a podcast that reads a new story each night, that kids can fall asleep to. The crickets can be used as a transition sound and as a sort of white noise to promote sleep.

The Troll on the Mountain

The Troll on the Mountain Original by Sarah Perkins
The Troll on the Mountain CROP by Sarah Perkins

This is a photo I took on my trip to Norway in June of 2024. Norway is steeped in folklore and stories of mountain Trolls is prevalent. When my companions and I climbed Mount Floyen in Bergen, Norway, the park and its signs, leaned heavily into these stories, warning climbers to beware of the trolls as they hiked. Most of the hike was beautiful and uneventful- besides the trials of climbing a mountain obviously. But as my companions and I finally descended the mountain we caught a glimpse of this big form staring down at us from the cliffside above. The original captures the immense climb that separated us and kind of down plays the face my friends and I thought we saw- it could be mistaken as just a big boulder. In the crop I focused on zooming in on the face so that it can be seen, but still capturing that it is staring down at us by focusing in on the giant tree in the foreground.

So where the original could be mistaken as just a rock- kind of like the blurry Loch Ness Monster Photo, the cropped version seems to showcase a curious, otherworldly creature hiding among the trees.

Breaking through the glass “ceiling”

The sound of breaking glass often brings up a conflict of interests in the minds of those that hear it. I chose Broken Window Large by Tomas Castelazo because it reminded me of the first time I ever had to add audio and visuals to a digital story telling assignment for a class. I chose Break3Glasses by Mikael Fernstrom, because it matched the first audio file I ever used and it seemed to match the photo.

But I also chose this picture and sound for another reason. In my own personal life I have finally “broken” free of what has seemed to hold me back and hold me down for most of my life: my job. I officially ended 7 years of teaching last Friday. Though my love for children is still strong, the system itself has become unbearable for me, like for many teachers; but many are forced to stay because of their situations. I was given a unique opportunity to leave the stress and I took it. And though some might scoff at my aspirations to become a librarian or to be a stay at home mom for my new step son, I have no regrets. I have finally broken through the glass ceiling of my life and the sky seems like the limit to me.

The Book Cover

Hello All!

My name is Sarah Perkins (Quijada) and I live in Jacksonville, Florida. I believe heavily in the saying “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” but I also believe Elle from Legally Blonde when she says “Books with tattered covers (or boring books) stay on the shelves.” So I hope you find the cover to my book interesting enough for a read. I am newly married with a young step-son, as well as a dog and a pet turtle. I am an Alumni of UNF with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Ed. and a Florida State Staff Credential in Early Childhood Ed. I am currently a VPK teacher to 4 and 5 year olds at the UNF Preschool , but I have taught in many other schools and many other grades. I have been teaching for about 7 years, but unfortunately the system has taken it’s toll on me and I will be leaving the profession very soon. I am currently studying Library sciences here at FSU with the intent of becoming a children’s librarian (hey, I can’t be expected to give up working with kids forever!). As far as hobbies go, I love to cook and bake with friends and family and I like trying my hand at making my own versions of my family’s favorite foods (Oreos, fruit snacks, birria tacos, bread, etc). I also am a ballroom dancer with Monarch Ballroom here in Jacksonville. Some of my favorite dances include; Salsa, Bachata, Swing, Waltz, Cha Cha, and Rumba. Finally, I also have a love for all things books, reading, and learning! While I love the feel of a physical book in my hands, I have come to appreciate the use of eBooks and audio books- I am a big fan of Audible! This concludes the “summary” on my personal book cover. I hope you enjoyed the brief glimpse of me- I can’t wait to get to work with and get to know you all.
