From Clutter to Clarity: Cropping for Emphasis at Devil’s Head

“Beautiful American Flag” by Michelle L Taylor is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND.

This photo was taken during a visit to Devil’s Head at Lake Lure, North Carolina, roughly fifteen years ago. The original image featured the American flag prominently centered, surrounded by other visitors. While scenic, the composition felt unbalanced, with the right side appearing cluttered. To improve the image, I cropped it to showcase the stunning backdrop of Lake Lure. I also removed the congested area with visitors, allowing the flag to take center stage as it gracefully waves in the wind. To enhance the visual impact, I increased the vibrancy and saturation. This cropping technique effectively re-centered the focus, emphasizing the flag while eliminating unnecessary distractions.

Magical Sunset

Sunsets hold an unparalleled magic for me. No matter my location or activity, I’m compelled to pause and witness their splendor. The image above perfectly encapsulates the awe and beauty that I experience during these moments. Each sunset is a unique masterpiece.

Watching the sky transform always uplifts my spirits, making my love for them undeniable. I chose the acoustic guitar to accompany this image because its light and airy sound mirrors the ethereal quality of a sunset. Just as one can easily lose themselves in the music of an acoustic guitar, it’s equally easy to become mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty of a sunset. Combining these elements – the visual and the auditory – creates an even more profound and immersive experience.

Finding My Way: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Me-enjoying the journey.

Hi everyone! I’m Michelle Taylor, originally from Sacramento, California. Growing up, I was one of four children, and at 10 years old, I learned I was adopted. This sparked a lifelong journey of self-discovery, including a quest to find my biological family.

Life has been a whirlwind! A short career in the military, two marriages, two wonderful adult children, and moves across the country—from California to Texas, South Carolina, Georgia, and now Florida—(Zephyrhills to be precise) have shaped who I am today. As an empty nester, I’ve embraced this new chapter, exploring my passions and rediscovering myself.

My interests are diverse: I’m a UFC enthusiast (I’ve even been to two live events!), an avid reader who co-hosts a book club at my place of employment, and a fan of streaming services like Netflix and Paramount+. I also enjoy connecting with people through Postcrossing, a website where I exchange postcards worldwide.

A significant turning point came during the pandemic when I submitted my DNA to Ancestry. This led to a remarkable discovery: I found my biological father and learned I have a sister and brother, all still living in Sacramento!

Sadie the Goldendoodle.

I’m excited to be in the MSI program, where I hope to learn about different careers, particularly- web design and usability. I currently work as an admin assistant at an insurance company, and am enjoying my new role as a ‘dog mom’ to Sadie, my 11-week-old Goldendoodle.
