The Power of a Teacher- Final Assignment

This story is the story of a teacher who worked hard to teach her kids. This video was compiled using ClipChamp and the audio narration is all by me. ClipChamp is by Microsoft and allows you to have layers of media. You can use it to create audio, edit video and picture clips. It also allows you to create rolling credits and a title slide.

The Good Life (Video Assignment)

I used ClipChamp and PowerPoint to make my video. I exported the PowerPoint slides as a video file (.mp4). I then uploaded it into ClipChamp with my music so I could then mix the two together. This was saved as a .mp4 file as well.

Tightrope Walking

As I was looking through Flickr’s Smithstonian Gallery, debating what I could use to tell a story, I found this folder entitled ‘Loran’. The word was so similar to my name that I was heavily intrigued and clicked on it. the picture to the left is one of the ones that popped up. It is taken from a bird’s eye perspective, looking down at the ground.

It seems these towers are everywhere around the world transmitting radio signals for ships and aircraft. I never once thought to learn their names because for all of their hard work and talents, they never stood out. And yet their job is one of the most important jobs: to give data to towers so people can fly across our world, to visit their loved ones or to take a trip.

When I went to crop it, I realized how important the shoes were in this picture. The dirty converses tell a story of their own as the toes of them peek at the bottom of the original photo. Without them, the photo turns into this bridge with a mountain at the other side. The bridge looks to be held up by wires, almost as if it were over water or a huge valley.

So often I feel myself walking this tightrope of being a college kid and an adult. While this may seem normal, I often wonder if I will be caught if I fall. I get so caught up in all of my adult responsibilities that often when I go to FSU events, I take a deep breath and remember that I am just a college student. Everything will be okay and my friends and family are there to lift me up whenever I need a reminder of who I am.

Valentine’s Day

I have always loved Valentine’s Day. Sure, it is a holiday that capitalizes on money and getting gifts for loved ones. Many people say they hate it because of the idea that there is a special day to show people that you love them. I think that is interesting, as we often forget to tell the ones we love just how much we love them. I pour myself into my friends and family and recognize on a daily basis that I am a mosaic of everyone I have ever loved and who has loved me. Valentine’s Day is a season for love, and it fills the air during January and February. Some of my favorite memories happen around Valentine’s Day, watching Romcoms with my friends, making cherry pies and friendship bracelets, and eating way too many conversation hearts.

My mom’s favorite flowers are tulips. For Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, I would watch my mom get tulips and gush over how pretty they were. They came to symbolize spring and Valentine’s Day for me. Fields of tulips are gorgeous and in my romantic mind, I would love to run through them in a princess dress as it trails behind me. The song is entitled spring which I think fits perfectly in the way that the picture looks. They tell a story of how spring (and Valentine’s Day) makes me feel. This specific piece reminds me of middle school, when I would listen to it as I learned Spanish. The song has given me focus and the ability to learn what is now my favorite language.

I hope this audio and picture inspires you to go out and tell your friends and family that you love them. Love is not finite and should be shared as much as possible. May you all live your lives with love!

All About Me!

All About Me!

Hello new friends! My name is Lora Thaxton! I am from Wakulla, a small county south of Tallahassee. I am studying Information Sciences, which is really exciting for me because my mom graduated from this program (here at FSU) in 2008!

Me at the FSU vs. LSU game September 4th, 2022

The coolest thing about me is my after-school hobbies! I am one of the 420 world-renowned Marching Chiefs. I play the mellophone (which is a marching French horn). I love being a Marching Chief, because of the friendships and fun we have. One of my favorite memories was getting to go to New Orleans, Louisiana with the band as a first-year member. This trip was exciting for all kinds of reasons: being in a college band for the first time, being in NOLA without my parents, and being surrounded by friends. The trip and location itself was incredibly special to me, because my dad (a second generation Marching Chief) asked my mom (a first generation Marching Chief) out on a date in the Super Dome where we would play LSU. The night after the game, my friends and I went on a crusade for ice cream (and spoons, which are harder to find than you might think) while the entire French Quarter was celebrating. We finished the night in our hotel room, sitting on the floor eating our ice cream and watching ESPN play our ending field goal block as one of their top ten plays.

When I am not representing the school in my Chiefs attire, I am usually found teaching. I graduated in Spring 2024 with my bachelor’s from FSU-Teach Mathematics. Right now, I am a sub for a 7th grade reading class at my middle school in Wakulla. I love what I do, and I am so excited to begin teaching on my own one day, whether that be reading or math. I am getting this degree so I can one day pursue a librarian job at a middle school and become ALA accredited.

Honestly, when looking at this class, I was a little nervous. I have little to no experience in doing any sort of editing. I am excited to learn how to edit because it will allow me to better my own skills for when I teach and create lessons. Librarians, especially those who work in schools, have to have many talents that they can use to get people excited about books.

I cannot wait to meet all of you and get to know you within this class!
