The Penny Game

Synopsis: Hungry in Florence, my friend Hailey and I let a penny decide our fate. Each flip leads us through plazas, alleys, and overpriced restaurants until we find a tiny trattoria with handmade pasta. With wine in hand and the best meal of our trip, we realize the best experiences come when you least expect them.

Trend Talk

Description:

I chose to do a fashion related podcast called “Trend Talk” for this assignment. The goal of this podcast is to discuss a controversial fashion trend on each episode with input from listeners. The intended audience for this podcast would be teens, young adults, and fashion enthusiasts. To acheive this vibe, I chose to use a high pitched, excited voice to portray the sense of an outgoing individual. The first three clicks in the introduction of the podcast are meant to sound like a camera at a photoshoot or clicks from paparrazi. Next, I picked a lofi song that reminded me of something that I would hear at a fashion show or gallery event. The addition of the police siren audio clip adds a bit of humor that will be necessary to keep listeners from getting bored throughout the duration of the podcast. I felt that it was not necessary to have background music while I was speaking so that there was not a distraction from what I was saying.

A Viewpoint with a Million Stories

I took this photo during my winter trip after hiking to the top of the Mirador de Gibralfaro in Malaga, Spain. We reached the top of the viewpoint right before the sunset, and the colorful buildings of Malaga came alive. Although I could only capture one perspective of the view in a photo, taking a 360-degree glance from the viewpoint made me think how every individual I could see has lived a different story. From the cruise boats at the port to the port operators, the X-pats residing in the beach highrises, the tourists hiking up the mountain with me, and the Spaniards who have lived in Malaga their whole lives, each individual has a different upbringing and goal. I chose to focus on the Plaza de Toros de La Malagueta for the cropped image to highlight the Spanish traditions and culture associated with bullfighting. Although I believe bullfighting is unethical, it is fascinating that the Malaga Bullring is still functional and has become one of the most prominent bullrings in Spain. I named the image “The Matador” because that is the Spanish name for the bullfighter who tries to kill the bull. From this image, you can see inside the bullring, and it was easy for me to imagine the stadium full of people waiting to see who would win the fight. Cropping the image also helped remove some noise from the trees and grass along the hiking path. I followed the rule of thirds to ensure that the focal point brought the most attention and was more balanced. I love this image because if I were to focus further into the horizon on the freight ship in the background, I would have been able to consider the lives of a different group of people who sail the sea for a living.

Sounds of the Alhambra

Dawn Charles V Palace Alhambra Granada Andalusia Spain” by Jebulon is marked with CC0 1.0

During my trip to Europe this winter break, I had the privilege of seeing the Alhambra from the Mirador de San Nicolás viewpoint in Granada, Spain. As the sun was setting, the glow of the Alhambra was one of the most picturesque sights I have laid my eyes on. In the background of my view, the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains glistened as the sky turned from blue, to pink, to complete darkness. As I was watching the sunset from this lookout, there was a group of three Flamenco artists playing the guitar and singing a traditional Andalusian song. Flamenco music and dancing can be found everywhere in Granada and the addition of this part of the culture made my experience more memorable. After hearing the three men play that night, I was hooked and knew that I needed to adventure to a traditional Tablao for a Flamenco show. I chose Jardines de Zoraya and was blown away by the synchronicity and fluidness of the performance.

With that in mind, I chose this audio because it reminded me of the song that I heard the day I visited Alhambra. Without hearing this music, the image is stunning, yet the addition of the sounds makes it hard not to crave being there. The music enhances the rich cultural aspects of Granada and ensures that the Alhambra is more than a beautiful monument.

Getting to Know Me!

Hi everyone! My name is Kyla Cacoilo and I am currently living in Tallahassee, Florida. I am originally from beautiful Sarasota, Florida and love the beach and being outside in the sun! I am pursuing my Master’s in Information Technology and plan to graduate in Spring 2025. I graduated from FSU in 2023 with my Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology and I am excited to become a double Nole! Currently, I work at Florida State University Information Technology Services as an IT Service Management Specialist. In this role, I help to manage major incidents, on-board and off-board services, and lead organizational change management. I have worked at FSU ITS for 2 years, and I am excited to see where my journey will take me!

Outside of school and work, my favorite hobby is to travel! I have definitely caught a bit of a travel bug and cannot stop exploring. Just this week, I got back from a European winter adventure where I travelled to see one of my college roommates. We explored Madrid, Budapest, Vienna, and Andalusia and had an absolutely wonderful time! Some of the most amazing things that I saw included the Alhambara in Granada, the Patios in Cordoba, and the Austrian National Library in Vienna.

Other than travelling, my other hobbies include pottery, hot yoga, cycling, reading, and relaxing in the sun! Over the past 6 months, I have been enrolled in a pottery class and I have learned how to make pots, bowls, plates, mugs, and more! Pottery has always fascinated me and I am excited that I have been able to start a new hobby.

Throughout this semester, I hope to become more confident in my skills related to digital-media resources. I have personal experience editing and creating different medias, yet I have never taken a course to teach technqiues. I am excited to learn a new perspective that is different than my self-taught skills and hope to learn some techniques that will speed up the process. I am excited to have a great semester and I am looking forward to meeting all of you!
