The Forgotten Melody

“The Forgotten Melody” by Jaleen Bedminster licensed under CC-NC-ND 4.0.

Synopsis: The Forgotten Melody is a story of a retired pianist, Iris, who recently lost her husband due to natural causes. Iris finds herself quietly sifting through old belongings, reflecting on love, loss, and the memories attached to music. As she rediscovers fragments of her past, the piano keys no longer carry the same sound, they seem to echo with the ghost of melodies shared with her late husband. Through a series of emotional visuals and subtle voiceovers, we see her journey of remembrance, nostalgia, and the quiet ache of moving on.

Project Edit/Software Used: I created my digital story using Canva Pro, where I put together the visual sequence, title card, and closing credits. The audio was edited and leveled in Adobe Audition, where I combined my voiceover clips into a single cohesive track. The voiceovers were recorded using my personal iPhone and brought an intimate, emotional tone to the narrative.

Citations: My images and videos in this project were sourced from Pexels, allowing me to visually tell the story with cinematic stills and subtle moment. The background music was pulled from Freesound to add more weight and ambiance to the scenes.

My cat Lottie, who was 7 months old when this photo was taken, is a very laid-back cat until it’s time to play. In the original photo, you can see the background is very noisy and it’s a bit difficult to focus on what she is playing with. It looks like I had just come from school and changed my attire because my bookbag is on top of my dressing table, wide open, and my closet door is also open. It also looks like I recently opened a package, and the item inside was intended for Lottie to play with, so I sat on the floor to play with her.

In the edited photo, I minimized the background by first cropping out the noise utilizing the 1:1 Square preset. I utilized the “rule of thirds’, and positioned her in the right corner of the photo where it’s eye level for the viewers to have eye space when viewing my precious Lottie. I also wanted to highlight her beautiful coat pattern so I increased the brightness and reduced the contrast to bring out the white and ashy goldish/brown color her fur exuberates. Additionally, I adjusted the color balance to make her fur look even more vibrant and sharpened the image to bring out the details in her eyes and whiskers. I feel like this photo captures Lottie’s playful spirit perfectly. When Lottie gets in her “zone” to play with her favorite wand, I love how her pupils dilate. Not only do her eyes track the movement of the toy, but her head moves wherever it goes. I remember how she pounced on the toy with such enthusiasm, making me laugh and forget about whatever was going on at the time.

For this assignment, I knew right away that I wanted to create my post based on my current passions and hobbies. Over the past few months now, I’ve been researching on crystals and their healing frequencies, and combining this knowledge with my yoga. The photo above showcases the lattice of Amethyst, which I believe beautifully exemplifies the crystal’s structure and the strength it provides to those who hold it Amethyst is for its ability to boost the immune system, reduce physical aches, alleviate mental fatigue, and encourage clear thinking.

The audio attached is a frequency like melody that most would use to silence unwanted thoughts. The “Hillsound” audio is very similar to listening to sound baths, which help release blockages in your desires, emotions, and brain functions. This practice is also known as meditating on your crown chakra, which is the energy center located at the top of your head. The crown chakra is associated with higher consciousnesses, spiritual connection, and enlightenment. By focusing on this chakra, you can enhance your energy systems and promote your overall well-being. Like all matter, crystal have energy, and Amethyst, in particular, possesses healing energies and frequencies that users can harness to enhance their way of living. The photo included demonstrates the almost aura-like quality of Amethyst, highlighting the kind of healing light it promotes. This is why I chose the photo, it represents the healing elements that it provides any individual who owns it and I find that fascinating.

From Island Roots to IT Pursuits

Prior to graduating with my MIS degree, I planned to get my bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, as I was drawn to risk management and the insurance industry. However, over time, I realized that my passion wasn’t in numbers alone. Through meaningful connections and strong networking, I found a new path and I now work as an Office Administrator for the Information Technology Services department at FSU. Before accepting my current position, I considered moving to Rhode Island to work as a Claims Adjuster for an insurance company. However, my heart was still at FSU, where I could further my education without the burden of heavy financial costs with professors that loves what they do!

Currently, I’m in my second semester of the Master’s of Information Technology program at FSU, focusing on Information Architecture and User Design. While I’ve had some hands-on experience with manipulating software to create prototypes, I’m eager to expand my skills in media editing and digital production. This class I feel will challenge me in a great way to aid in my focus of media analysis, production and integrating digital elements like image, sound and video. I hope to use this knowledge to sharpen my creativity skills and produce engaging digital content that compliments me, my career and studies.

In my free time, I enjoy practicing yoga, hot yoga, journaling, meditating, and spending time in nature to ground myself. I also love taking retreats around the world and reconnecting with my deep sense of connectivity, love, and self. Recently, I visited St. Lucia to see my family, where I created new experiences and strengthened my bond with my family. Spending quality time with loved ones brings me so much joy and fulfillment. This is a bit of me, thank you for allowing me to share and I’m looking forward to learning and collaborating with everyone in this class. We’re going to make it a great semester!
