Exploring Florida is a bi-weekly podcast dedicated to travelers interested in exploring Florida nature trails, small towns, and other hidden gems. In the podcast series I discuss the attraction, atmosphere, and long history to the week’s lesser known destination. Come join me and be inspired to pack up your travel gear and explore Florida.

The hope of this podcast is to encourage listeners to set aside time to get out, travel, and explore historic Florida outside of the major cities. The podcast begins with intro music as I welcome listeners back to the podcast. The intro music then fades into the background with the ambient sounds I’ve recorded at each destination. During the Egans Creek Greenway podcast, you can hear the nature and wildlife present at Egans Creek Greenway as I’m speaking about Egans Creek and what makes it a great next visit for you.

The intro music was cut using Audacity with instrumental sections from the song, “Let Nature Be Nature” which I found via CC Mixster. The ambient nature sounds and wildlife sounds were also cut using Audacity and overlayed into the podcast audio. The podcast photo was edited using Apple Photos with a photo taken from my visit to Egans Creek Greenway. I used what I learned from our Typography media lab to custom make a unique podcast cover that features the actual location I went to visit; each podcast would feature a unique cover of the locale to further inspire listeners to go out and discover the new destination.

As an outdoor enthusiast myself, my hope for the podcast is to inform, entertain, and inspire others like me to get out and explore Florida.

Orinoco Flows

“Sail away, sail away, sail away…”. If you did not immediately understand the reference, it is from Enya’s song, Orinoco Flow (Sail Away). Do you hear it now too while looking at “Orinoco Flows”? Using my Macbook’s Apple Photos App, I cropped my original photo and changed the photo filter to create “Orinoco Flows”. It creates a completely new story separate from the original photo, which evokes a sense of travel and exploration to me. I use the rule of thirds to create negative space on the left of the image to emphasize the boat sailing away towards the right end of the image. I also set the horizon on the bottom horizontal line grid, which is best used when shooting sunset photos. I placed the Sun as a point of interest in the power point where the upper horizontal line grid and right vertical line grid intersect. Lastly, I changed the photo filter to “Dramatic Warm” to enhance the shadows from the ocean ripples and add an overall yellow tint to infer the sunset just before dusk.

After looking through hundreds of recent digital photos in my iPhoto library, the sail boat in the background of a babymoon photo caught my eye. The intent of my original photo was to capture my beautiful wife with the sunset behind her while we were enjoying our sunset cruise out in the ocean in Key Largo. I don’t even recall seeing that particular sail boat while taking this picture. I’m really amazed at how a simple cropping and photo filter tweak can create a completely new story from within the same photo. Now, is it just me or do you also still hear Enya’s song in your head? Sorry, not sorry.

Worry, anxiety, and distress are normal emotions to have in life. Worry, anxiety, and distress, however, are not the end of the story. For me personally, you can bridle these thoughts and emotions by seeking professional support, confiding in a trusted group of friends, or by confiding in someone you trust and love. I chose the image Rainbow over the Missouri because, as someone that has and manages anxiety, I believe that in the midst of times of darkness, there is peace, hope, and beauty always present. Some folks need a little light to make it evident and others hold onto faith when there is no light. Others may need a reminder of hope from a familiar and trusting voice. Although the beautiful green landscape and waters are shadowed by darkness in the image, I love that the rainbow is present with just the right amount of sunlight to make it appear. To supplement the emotions this image evokes to me, I chose Pitx’s Dark Side of Tranquility. The use of acoustic guitar is calming for me while the 120 beats per minute express the uptick anxiety can have on someone like me. Anxiety no longer keeps me down as long as I seek support or just have that someone I love and trust to lend a listening ear.

Are We There Yet?

I’m usually a man of patience, but for the past 24 weeks I’ve been eager to get to April 2025. No, it’s not to complete my MSIT program at FSU – I still have three classes to finish, which will be completed by the end of the Summer term. No, it’s not to attend Megacon and add to my collection of comics, collectibles, and autographs – Megacon is next month in Orlando. No, it’s not because I’m selling our house and moving away from the First Coast – I’ve been raised here since my parents relocated in 1986 and I don’t foresee leaving any time soon. “Then, why?”, you ask. I’m rather impatient at the moment, because I, Jason Rosario, along with my beautiful wife, will be welcoming our first child into our family this year. We are so excited and cannot wait to meet our baby boy face to face in April.

As with first time Dads, I have questions, hopes, fears, and daydreams of what is to come. Will raising him up in Florida be the best? Will my current role as an IT Director allow me the flexibility and time to spend with my family; will I quickly find that work and life balance? Will he love OG Star Wars as much as we do? What type of a dad will I become? From a student perspective, will I be able to maintain an “A” with my final class, or worse, will I need to postpone taking it and delay my Master’s degree? We shall see.

As with most new parents, we will definitely be taking photos and videos galore. I’m looking forward to our digital media class because I can immediately take away what I learn from our course and apply it to the photos, videos, and media we take of our family. I’ll also be able to enhance my social media skills and possibly create a secure and private website for family member access to personal baby blogs, photos, and media of our baby boy as he grows up. Unbeknownst to me, the timing of taking LIS 5313 has worked out in our favor, not only for my degree program, but also for our new bundle of joy upcoming.

Are we there yet? Seriously. I cannot wait for this next big adventure to begin in our family and marriage. I need to remind myself that he’ll be here before we know it.
