Reaching the Finish Line

“Reaching the Finish Line” by Alex Bowman is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0.

Reaching the Finish Line is a story about a dedicated triathlete training for their first Ironman race. The story follows the highs and lows of their training journey, from early morning swims to grueling bike rides. It’s told from the athlete’s point of view, capturing their inner dialogue and the physical and emotional challenges they face along the way.

The voiceover was recorded by me, using Windows Voice Recorder. The majority of video clips were taken from Pexels.com, but some others were taken from Pixabay.com. The song that I chose to include, I found under the Motivational section of UpBeat.io’s website. I also chose to use an audio clip from Freesound.org of a crowd cheering at the start of the race. Similarly to my other assignments, I used DaVinci Resolve with YouTube export settings to edit the audio and video clips together into a cohesive story.

Who am I?

“Zebra Butterfly” by Alex Bowman 2.3.2025 CC BY-NC 2.0

It’s amazing how much cropping an image can completely transform its meaning, altering the viewer’s perception and response.

Take for example my first image, a beautiful butterfly, enjoying a flower, on a sunny day. An image like this, may depict a serene moment, with an ever so delicate butterfly. Given this picture alone, the viewer would likely admire the butterfly and move on, not questioning what else is contained in the original photo.

“Curious Cat” by Alex Bowman 2.3.2025 CC BY-NC 2.0

Conversely, focusing solely on this kitty cat’s intense gaze, a completely different image is born. A sense of the animal’s predatory instincts engulf the photo leaving the viewer wondering what lies just outside of frame. Cropping like this, is a powerful tool in visual storytelling because it controls what the viewer sees and, just as importantly, what they don’t.

Finally, the complete image, containing the full context behind the shot. When shown in full, the image may depict a moment of curiosity, with the cat gently observing the delicate butterfly. The simple act of framing highlights how context shapes interpretation, proving that what is left out of an image can be just as powerful as what is included.

A Castle in the Hills

When I was looking through pictures for this assignment, I couldn’t help but think of a trip that I took last summer. During my vacation me and my Girlfriend had the privilege of visiting all over Spain. One of my favorite stops was at Alcázar of Segovia (pictured above), which is a medieval castle located in the city of Segovia, Spain. The castle itself is built upon a crag of rocks, intertwining the natural creations of Mother Nature, with bricks made by human hands. We spent a few hours at the castle and the surrounding area, however given the chance I would love to go back and explore the never ending hallways further.

I chose this audio because I felt that it perfectly encapsulated the feeling of seeing the Alcázar of Segovia for the first time. A sense of awe, and majesty, at the marvel of human ingenuity, constructed into the mountainside. I appreciated how this audio used a variety of different sounds to weave together a narrative. Hopefully, by listening to this track, and viewing this image, you can have an idea of how I felt when I first laid eyes upon the castle.

In a Galaxy, Far, Far Away

Who am I? My name is Alexander Bowman, I am a born and raised Tallahassee native (go Noles!). Currently, I am in my last semester, pursuing a Master’s in Information Technology (IT), here at FSU; before that I was completing my undergrad also in IT. I am currently working as an IT Technician at TMH, however I am hopeful to break into IT Auditing, after I graduate come May. This semester is going to be especially busy for me, as I attempt to finish my degree ahead of schedule and balance working full-time.

When I’m not at work or school, I’m often out for a run. I am training for the Tallahassee Half Marathon in February, which I will be running with my Father. This will be my first time participating in a race that is over 13 miles, so I am very excited to complete it. I also enjoy other outside activities like Tennis, and Pickleball. One of my favorite places to go here in town, is the ForestMeadows tennis complex off of Meridian road.

I am excited to learn more about Digital Media, both personal and professional throughout the course of this semester. I am especially excited to create these weekly posts, and to see what other’s will have to share. Here’s to an amazing Spring semester!
